The silver Thunderbird in my avatar is a factory 302, 2bbl, C-4 3-speed transmission, and it will do 800 km a tank regularly. All in how you tune and set them up.
Just filled the tank this morning on my Colony Park. 19.09 combined hiway/local. That's pretty good, I think.
My Kia Curse is now getting 19 city when it used to get 10 to 15 depending on its mood. I haven't been on the highway in a year.
You're right, it's all in how you tune. We just got a Chassis Dyno up here. When you plug in dual wide bands and simulate real world driving conditions, watching your air/fuel mixtures under various loads, you learn a lot! It's all about efficient combustion. We did a Mustang, primaries were pig rich, running #74 jets, A/F ratio 12.1:1 in the secondaries, #78 jets. At WOT, the car was running 16:1 momentarily (Before it died!) We swapped in a set of #69s in the Primaries, stuffed in #84s for the secondaties. At cruise, it's 14.5:1 and at WOT its conservative at 14.5:1. Picked up 75 HP! (It wouldn't run at wide open for very far. Had to keep it at mid throttle) We stopped the pull at 5500, but it was still building power. I threw my Malibu wagon on it, got an impressive 169 HP and 274 LbFt. With rod changes, and secondary opening rate changes (Quadrajet) it went to 209 HP and 304 LbFt. Dyno tuning works the best. You can't tell what you're doing free revving in the driveway. The Mustang ...and the Malubu wagon!! The wagon first pull
Believe it or not, I get well over 24mpg with the hearse on the hiway. It has a completely stock 5L Olds (307cu). I'm not sure what the curb weight for a '90 Estate wagon is, but the hearse has only a steel tubing supported chipboard deck in the back (no seats etc) which should be lighter than the stock decking/seats. The fiberglass top would add some weight, but the metal roof was removed before installation, and there are no window motors for the back doors and tailgate, nor are there any side windows in the rear.
I got 13.8 MPG in the Squire at 65-70 down the freeway bringing it home, i was rather pleased w/that as its a 390 2bbl
I get 24.30 highway MPG with the 318/3 on da tree in the Waygun running just under 70 MPH with 2356016 tires and 3.23 rear gears. City is less ,naturally. But still impressive for a 38 year old car with 68,000 miles on it. I believe being a standard tranny,it makes a difference in the MPG compared to an automatic of similar vintage. I am a firm believer that it is key to drive at certain speeds and keep the motor fine tuned to get the best fuel economy. I also learned that running on the freeway with the rear window down decreases your fuel economy. Not sure why--just an observation from my own experience.
I'm getting about 30 USMPG (7.8l/100km) HWY and 20 (12l/100km) around town. I live on the side of a mountain range so I'm pretty happy with that. It's about 4mpg better on the hwy than my previous wagon despite being about 150lbs heavier.
my neon gets 40ish on the highway if i drive nce at 85is mph i get about 30-35 my truck gets about 2 gallons to the mile and im scared what my wagon is gunna do... 79 custom cruiser with a sbc 355 with some other mods :s
I'm currently getting 138mpg on my lil gas sipper bike, ahahaha. Its a good thing too with a 1.5 gallon tank. But a once every 3 week's fill up is a blessing after driving the gas sucking Roadie especially since gas is $4.27 a gallon here.
