I think I'm getting somewhere around 21 or 22 on the highway in my Colony Park. To tell you the truth, I never calculated it. I just filled it up yesterday and remembered this post, so I set the trip set to zero. I'll let you know what it comes out to when I fill up the next time.
My '08 Taurus X is getting around 21.5 combined with a bit more highway than around town. I've noticed there's at least a 2-3 mpg difference between 65mph and 75mph. I get lower gas mileage at 75 but get there quicker so overall, I use less gas!! (Just kidding--I know that's not true.)

 I get lower gas mileage at 75 but get there quicker so overall, I use less gas!! Hey, makes sense to me. The less time driving equals less gas burned. :yahoo:Just kidding--I know that's not true. Or is it????

Can you prove it? Are ya sure? :taz: After all the engine is running less. Therefore less fuel going thru the intake.

:biglaugh:Miles between point A and point B are the same...a constant. Whatever your MPG is between the 2 points is what it is. How fast you get there is irrelevant except that, typically, it will make your MPG less.
It's like going a hundred miles an hour to get to a gas station before you run out of gas.:biglaugh:

:lolup:a hundred miles an hour to get to a gas station before you run out of gas.-------------- Is this a valid excuse when getting stopped by a cop? Or is that like the one the old lady with Alzhiemers used----I was hurrying to get there before I forgot? -------:yippee:About fuel milage. I gave up. I just drive what I have and fill up with a smile on my face as I hold one had over my rear when I pay!:banghead3:

I've been having this discussion in a couple of other threads, and figure this is the best place for it.

78 Ford Thunderbird, 351M, FMX 3-speed auto, modified with long tube headers, high flow cats, 'x' cross over, dual Flowmaster mufflers on 2 1/4 inch pipes: 24 miles to the U.S. gallon. Upgrades to follow. My goal is 40-45 mpg in my 2 ton tank.

My Brother's last car was a great wagon, but at 450,000 miles, he gave up on her, worse luck. He had an 86 Mercury Colony Park LX, 351 and Trailer Tow III package. He was doing 720 miles a tank, with the standard 18 gallon tank. His average fill was about 16 gallons. That works out to 45 miles to the gallon in mostly stock, very high mileage, 2 ton wagon. Not exactly shabby.

LOL... i might believe 720km per tank, but no way 720 miles.
it would either need a rear gear less than 1:1 or a motor able to pull the car turning less than about 550 rpm..... or 4ft tall tires...or all the above.

with standard gear and tire selections the motor would need to be run so lean that it would soon expire.

I'm doing 800 KM a tank on my 78 Thunderbird right now, with the stock 351M, 2bbl carb, FMX 3-speed transmission and snow tires! My Brother's Colony Park had the factory 351, heavy duty AOD with factory shift kit, and 2.73:1 Traction Loc axle. It did have an Edelbrock Performer intake with the 600 cfm square bore Edelbrock carb by Weber. The carb was fitted with non-standard metering rods and jets, as talked through with the tech desk at edelbrock when the parts were ordered. It also had smooth flowing exhaust manifolds, high flow cats, FlowMaster DeltaFlow mufflers all on custom, mandrel bent 2 1/4 pipes with X cross over. When he ditched the original VV carb and intake, he also switched from the 3-lead ignition control module to the 2 lead, which eliminated the barometric pressure compensator which seemed to hurt rather than help. For tires, he was running a set of BFGoodrich comp T/A HR-4s, size 225/70R15 at 45 lbs. Other than the intake, the timing chain was replaced at roughly 400,000 miles. Otherwise, the engine was totally untouched. The transmission was opened for new fluid and filters every 2 years, otherwise as factory installed. He could, and did, drive from his home in Parry Sound, Ontario, to our parents' house in Toronto, and back home TWICE on a single tank, a distance of just over 1,100 kms, on a single fill, with some left over in the tank.

Had the body mounts not broken after an unintended off-road experience, he had further plans for upgrades. His goal was 2,000 kms, or 1,200 miles, per fill up, using off-the-shelf parts carefully chosen, matched and set up.
