Phantom 309 I looked out the windows and you weren't here! Kin ya narrow that down a little?

My son and his wife both are employed by the US Mail in central Illinois. They were both snowed in at home one day. Lucky the road crew cleared a trail so the mail could go thru the next day.

I had to laugh about the minivan bumper couldn't handle a few snow drifts. :rofl2:Or were there other SUV's in those drifts? :rofl2:
Meanwhile here in NW Florida it was in upper 20's but going up to maybe 70's within days. Wish you were HERE!

Got a 5AM walk in with the boys with no rain :yahoo:But know it's a typical Victoria winter day, been pouring heavy since 8AM.......

Just got back from taking them for a car ride (shopping) and that burned up some energy but the day is far from over and I know we will be out for a round of......
...through the park. Not so bad in one way, nobody else is out walking the trails in rain so I can let the boys run free witch is a bonus in itself..... but then the mop up once we get home:slap:
    :rofl2:

Heard from the outlaws this AM, Deb's parents in New Liskeard Ontario. They got so much snow over the past while, then it froze, now it's raining and there old house with a low slope roof developed some cracks in the ceiling because of the weight. I have 2 brother in-laws in the same town, much younger than me and built like brick sh** houses..... they wouldn't come over and help. The old man had to hire a couple "good" young bucks from there church to come over and help shovel off the roof.:slap::mad:

At least you missed the down pour Tedy. We had much the same as your relatives in Ontario. It's raining tonight with VERY HIGH winds so all that snow is melting. Shouyld be interesting in the morning, there is bound to be flooding.

Tedy: Tell the Outlaws to get a standing seam metal roof. Snow only builds to about 4 inches, then slides right off. Much safer than risking the roof caving in on them! Unless, that is, you WANT to be making an emergency run to Northern Ontario in winter because they injured or killed. That roof of theirs needs to be reinforced anyway! Collar ties should not be buckling like that.

I've never seen there house so I can't comment on the whys other than the roof load got to deep and heavy and dry wall ceiling cracks developed. But having just a little bit of experience with standing seam metal roof systems ( I have installed a few thousand miles in my day;)) Snow, iced up, wet, or all combined just doesn't slide rite off at 4 inches on a low slope or even a steep slope. All those conditions mentioned plus temperature (even winds) all play a contributing role as to when it's gona slide and how much gets buit up. Fact, the lower the slope of a roof metal or not metal will all ways build up and hold more snow. How ever, when and if the snow build up comes down in a mas amount that can be very dangerous, cars and people have been injured. I can't comment on Ontario building codes but out here in BC snow stops are required, mainly on commercial but more and more residential is getting it also for the same reason, so it does not slide off and...well kill ya!.
In the end, no matter what you do or how you build Mother nature will decide the out come:yup:

BTW fannie, My outlaws were also commenting on.."Oh great, now it's gona flood", and me and the dogs got totally soaked to the bone on our walk last night! :rofl2:

Tedy: With the Ontario Building Code, you should not be getting snow and ice damming at the eaves. There should be ample eave vents and ridge vents to keep all of the roof at the same temperature. Yes, there are hooks installed to break up the chunks. The thing is, you should never see enough built up to crack the trusses or collar ties with a metal roof. There is not the 'tooth' for ice to grip. At least not here in Ontario, especially with the snow in New Liseard.

The thing is, in a perfect world You should never see enough built up to crack the trusses or collar ties weather the roof is metal or not where ever you live.

In a perfect world The East Coast would not be getting this storm. In a perfect world The West Coast would not have had the sh** kicked out of it in a wind storm last night that is still blowing like crazy.

With the BC Building Code, You should not be getting parts of houses and buildings blown off last night.... but it happened!

The thing is, Mother nature decides what she is going to do and how she will do it and at those times it's all ways good to have a Building Code Book from your province handy.... you mite need it to start a fire to keep warm:rofl2:

Building codes change, a lot is based on weather and the worst storm based over a 100 year period, well storms keep getting worse and codes keep changing. Also, a house that is 50 years old may have been built to the codes of the time and they were correct for the time of construction. may have lasted 50 with no problems, but one day, one "perfect storm" and........

    Here we go again.

We are looking forward to another Blizzard tomorrow...20cm-40cm(8"-16") and winds gusting up to 80km/hr(50m/hr)...ahh another day off...;)

I managed to switch my day off to tomorrow, I'll work Friday instead. I drive my daughter (#3) to work every day. So this morning I told her to tell her boss(her cousin) that she won't be in tomorrow. He told her there is no one to work her shift so she has to come in. She did ask another girl if she would take her shift but she is a student in university, she said that if school was closed she'd work the shift...she won't know until the morning...

On a lighter note...only two months until Spring. :D
