I would say they were probably optional then on the 72 Chevys too. I cant imagine them not even offering it on the top-level full-size wagon. I know someone that has owned alot of these and still owns some... I am going to ask if any of his has the rear cargo area light. He actually has a 72 Kingswood Estate with the VERY RARE factory brocade cloth interior option. That was the only year they offered that on the Chevy wagon and it was only offered on the 72 Kingswood Estate and only in black.

My 1962 Chevy Bel Air has one on the roof in the rear, but they also offered one on the left side of the inside trim panel. I have seen pictures of it, but haven't seen one in person. I would like to find one if anyone has one that they would like to part with. Please PM me with a price... thanks Junk..

Well, I emailed a couple of guys that owns/has owned several early 70s Chevy wagons and asked this. One of the guys has 5 of these! He is going to check, because he said he dont recall. He said that due to the clamshell design, the way the window rolls up in the roof, that it may have been hard to put one up there on the clamshell wagons, but I am thinking I have seen some clamshell wagons with the rear cargo light... but I could be wrong... anyone with ANY make of clamshell with the rear light?

**Oh, I did find out that there were at least some Buick Estate Wagon clamshell wagons that didnt have the light. I looked up this 1971 Buick brochure and if you look here in this cargo area shot (lower right of pic) of a 1971 Buick Estate Wagon, you will note there is not a cargo area light on this wagon and it looks like it even has the upgrade interior option AND the 3rd seat (and defog), but again, no light, so perhaps it was an option on even the Buicks and surely the Chevys. Well see. Maybe it wasnt as strange afterall that my wagon dont have the light.

Gotta member too thats still early enough where you still have more option choices and a Dad at that time probably saved $100 in his mind, not getting the kids a light back there, Which would of been the first though in his head, and Ill just use a flashlight and see what I want better.

that 70s yellow n black one with the magnet on it to stick to the glove box door.

I have a 6 passenger wagon, and the one in the picture is the 9 passenger wagon ( third rear facing seat). Mine doesn't have the upholstered rear sides like the one in the picture. The reason that I saved this picture is because of the upholstery, and the fact that the car is also a Bel Air. As far as I have been able to tell, the only wagons that came this way were the Pontiac wagons. I am still checking to see if this was an upgraded trim level. Here is a picture of my car.. As you can see, it has been modified!!! :thumbs2:
The first picture is my car prior to my purchase, and the second picture is of a 1962 Pontiac that was converted at the same time that my car was done. To the best of my knowledge, these are the only two survivors and possibly only two were manufactured. There are no production numbers available, since the company went out of business a few decades ago..

My car has a manual third row light. THere is no remote switch, you have to turn it on, and its mounted in the roof. Has come in handy before. Also, there is a map light under the overhang of the dash, that is another helpful light.

mike your 1996 caprice should have 2 of them....just like mine... they should be on the grab handles for the tail-gunner seat...on the inside of the D pillars. they usually dont turn on when you open the back like a tailgate, only when you open the rear as a door. there also should be a little black button on the light that allows you to turn them on when its down as a tailgate.
