This week in Corvair (and Chevrolet) History...April 30, 1962 The white 1962 Corvair convertible in this photo became the 47th millionth Chevrolet produced for General Motors on April 30, 1962. It was built at GM’s Willow Run Assembly Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan (where most Corvairs were made). As you'll notice, there are other Corvairs in this photo along with having a rare 1914 Chevrolet Baby Grand in the background for this special occasion photo. Two major changes for Corvair for the 1962 model year was the introduction of a convertible, and also offering a high performance 150hp turbocharged Spyder option for the Monza coupes and convertibles. How fitting that the 47th millionth Chevrolet made was a new sporty Corvair convertible. We do not know the whereabouts of this Corvair. Personal thoughts and observations...I find it interesting that the random pick of the "47th" millionth number was chosen. You usually see the 50,000, 100,000, or 25th or 100th millionth produced vehicle being celebrated, etc. Maybe Chevrolet decided to do it this way on purpose so a Corvair could be selected and promoted since it was the first year a convertible and turbo package was being debuted. It is equally fascinating that the 1 millionth car built at Willow Run was also a white Corvair convertible (but a 1964 model). Just interesting...
