OEM is way expensive. And don't try to get one at NAPA....they shrink wrap them and they get crushed. Auto Zone uses a bubble wrap that allows the hole to float inside the bubble.

Oh....and...I forgot....you will need a hole removal tool to get the original hole out of the block. Then, you will also need the replacement tool to install the new hole. They make one that has the removal tool on one end and the replacement on the other, but, these are sometimes more expensive than buying two separate tools. If Auto Zone has one maybe they will loan it out.

If not, search for a special tool wholesaler in your area.

    What wholesome fun! :yup:

Ok need a stupid question answered. I've done a lot of stuff, but never a freeze plug. The 1-5/8 copper Dorman plugs I ordered just came in. They are the right size, but about double the depth of the original steel plug. Any idea if that will cause an issue with sealing??

Before I climb under there and start sweating after work I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time with the wrong part.

Mike I would think you just put it in and tap the plug until it bottoms out in the present hole in the block. Maybe add some sealer around the edges first.
    By the way great buy!:2_thumbs_up_-_anima
Lots of great advice on the hole whole freeze plug situation.

As far as replacing the original hole in the block, can't be done. You have to keep the old hole and get a new bare block to fit around it. But that's only with a 360 block. You can buy separate holes for the later Hemi or the old 440. You may find this swap easier after spending days under the truck trying to get that plug in that square hole.
The hole is square isn't it? You may have to file those round edges back to their original square shape before putting the new round plug in. Or not!

I don't really know the answer to your question, Mike. Never seen that before. You ordered COPPER? Did you order it for the car/engine specifically? MAYBE they KNOW about the plugs popping out problem and what you have is a new replacement item. Maybe. Could be wrong, too. If it was me...I wouldn't use it until I got the correct answer. But, that's just me.

Now I know this hole thing is a serious conversation but for those of us(me) who are ignorant to the whole thing it's hilarious...:rofl2:

shrink wrapped holes that might get crushed, not sure how a hole gets crushed...:biglaugh:

floating bubble wrapped holes...how do you find a hole in bubbles? :rofl2:

a hole removal tool...for the outy then a different one for the inny...:biglaugh:

    It has been "wholesome!"

Good luck getting that round plug into your square hole.

Sometimes ignorance is a very funny place...

Sometimes ignorance is a very funny place... It's often where we find all of our friends. So we're in good company! I believe being ignorant is still better than being stupid. But maybe there isn't a difference.
This whole hole thing reminds me of the guy going to the hardware store to buy post holes to build a fence!:D

Yes, those were American made. You can order them thru your Mexican or Chinese dealers yet. Trouble is they are metric and the posts are still American standard.
That's like trying to put a round brass freeze plug in a square hole.
Why do they call those freeze plug when they are not for freezing?
