Ivy what is horrible is that I remember / or shop most of these stores, and yeah even worked for some of them. I worked for 10 different retail Companies and only 2 are left and they are not owned by the same people.
I guess, we can still enjoy the memories. I once worked as a maintenance man at Crowley's in Livonia Michigan for a week
Ivy OMG I was the store manager for this store, Sears 6 corners, was at the intersection of Irving Park, Cicero and Milwaukee Avenues. The Sears is the white bldg. at the top of the picture, the automotive store was across the street - about 11 o'clock in the picture. The window on the corner was 3 stories high, and every year we had to replace at least 6 of the panels because the wind would kick up and something hit them and they shattered, Store had 8 levels, 5 for shopping, 2 for all the mechanicals and the lowest (2 stories below the street) was the Electric Companies switching station. Store did 65 million at the time with over 500 associates, 700 at Christmas. It was the biggest Sears store in Chicago. and top 5 in the nation. there was no other Sears store like in the nation. It was unreal. Did closing announcements in English, Russian; Polish and Spanish.
thanks annap01gt! just got 4 more burnt off yesterday, so much for effectiveness of Efudex. didn't think this was a 1 time deal and forget about it but it's only been about 90 days since I did the treatment, no real happy about it , and highly disappointed,. gerrr!
It sounds like sailing especially around the Carrribean isn't the best idea, for melanoma sufferers, unless you somehow wrap yourself with bandages like a mummy first. Or how do you plan avoiding direct sunshine?
Been off too long. This was interesting reading. Good luck MAK. For me, retirement has been great for nearly 25 years. My adult kids mow my lawn now and most other things needing done. When they are too busy, someone around town shows up. Too many shade trees for a garden or a pool. My grandkids, this computer, old friends, and staring out the windows keeps us busy. I remember the Chicago Sears store, and of course the tower. I used to drive over 160 miles up rt 66 just to shop at the old J.C.Whitney auto parts store. Since we live in central Illinois we went to Chicago and Detroit often. Our grown kids went to Chicago to see the decorations and ride a Christmas Orient Express train recently. Son said it's just not the same! In the two years we've been back in central Illinois the local K-Mart where all three of our kids worked closed. The reopened small Sears which replaced two different Sears replacements, closed over a year ago. After bad experiences in Gainesville, Fl Sears, I gave up on all Sears stores. Sure glad we no longer have an outhouse. I remember many uses for the old Sears catalogs.
I once drove from Metro Detroit to J.C. Whitney. I did it in a VW Super Beetle with an old '61 1200 cc engine. Gasoline money, back then, wasn't even to think over. The trip itself was an experience. J.C. Whitney itself was a magnet for all types. Ahead of us in line were patrons getting into a fist fight. No boredom to complain about, Sir
JC Whitney sat on a pointy corner, taking up most of a city block. On the other side of the building the signs showed Warshowski, or similarly written. Each had their own identical catalog with the different names and street addresses. Maybe it used to be like Sears-Robuck and Montgomery-Wards ? I also made several round trips from central Illinois to Chicago in a 1957 VW Beetle. Gas was usually under 25 cents a gallon and I could drive up and back on a tank of fuel. I think the VW held around 11 whole gallons. Sorry about that time my wife beat me while standing in line.
Gee, a fistfight, in J.C. Whitney? Perish the thought! Mom and Dad had Sears credit cards for a few decades (Dad had his up to his passing last December), but it was what they would use for school clothing, for Christmas (which is why we kids looked forward every year to the Wish List catalog) and for car basic maintenance. Now it's looking like that will no longer be true.
It would have been much less entertaining, if you were able to take her instead, looking at the bright side of things, Sir
