I vaguely remember this in a military 'trade' magazine or other such publication, a loooooong time ago. It might've even been something Dad had in his office at NAS Sandpoint way back when, but it's so fuzzy, I'm just not sure.
Check out this story about Gookin and his Autocar dump truck. Ray E. Gookin, born in Iowa in 1893, was a hard-working, sharp-witted, thrifty, and careful trucker who purchased a new three-ton Autocar dump truck at the age of thirty-two in 1925. He then packed up his wife and three children, drove the open cab truck to Los Angeles, and started a new life as an independent trucker. In the greater LA area, he drove the Autocar for about 40 years, racked up over one million miles hauling construction materials, and became one of the most famous dump truck drivers in the US. The details of his trucking career are below in an enlargeable article initially published in “Trucking Business” in February 1965 and later in “The Wheels Of Time” May/June 1990 issue. https://theoldmotor.com/?p=192678 Courtesy of The Old Motor
