Hey guys...I am looking for help. My 1988 Ford Country Squire shakes at 25 and 45 mph, but smoothes out when I accelerate. I have change the plugs / wires and confirmed that the distributor cap is good. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Do you feel it in the steering wheel, or in the seat, or both? Sounds to me more like a tire balance issue than a miss, if it is truly a shake instead of a miss or a stumble.
It is the entire car shaking...almost like a jerking. It does idle a bit rough, and if I use the AC it idles rougher.
You might think that a misfire is happening, and it may be true, but an engine misfire will not cause the vibration you describe. Only an imbalance will cause that, so check your engine's harmonic balancer, your driveshaft, your front and rear axle bearings, rear axles themselves, and the tires. The simplest thing is to pay for up to an hour's diagnosis, which will at least whittle the list down, if not find the culprit.
Good news...I fixed the misfire. I replaced the distributor cap and router but the behavior was still there. I moved onto the fuel injectors thinking one or multiple would be clogged...turns out that one injector was disconnected and that was causing the misfire. I strongly believe that this was done intentionally by the last mechanic that worked on the car in order to squeeze more cash for repairs. The connection was simply installed in a way that made it look connected. Anyway thanks for the suggestions...the car runs like a top now.
The reason why I finally started doing my own repairs, and became a mechanic myself, is that a grease monkey deliberately damaged an ignition wire on a car I had gotten running, I think in order to make money off me. I took it to him to dial in the timing and idle, but I foiled that and found what he had done when it had a rough idle and a suspicious 'tick' or 'snap' from under the hood. So after I found and fixed the wire, I went back to the shop and read the guy the Riot Act for sabotaging my engine. They unsurprisingly closed not long after that.
Not making excuses for the mechanic, you must of had some kind of interaction with him to make you feel this way, but some of those connecters don't plug in very easily. I've had it happen and when I went back and checked my connections, one will snap into place that wasn't connected all the way. Glad you got it figured out and fixed.
