Im having trouble finding the answer to this: Does the idle solenoid on my 84 only bump idle with ac, or always holds idle and lets off on shut down to prevent dieseling

Only way to find out is to shut off the A/C controls, put a 12 volt test light on the lead to the solenoid, then turn on the key. If it lights up, it's for anti-dieseling. If it doesn't, jumper the pressure switch on the A/C, then turn the A/C controls on; if it lights up, then the solenoid is an A/C kicker.

 

A few issues since driving:
- idle solenoid doesn't work all the well
- most if the gauges dont work
- all seatbelt females are missing
- rear window track is broken
- center rear view mirror has fallen off
- passenger rear door won't open from inside or out.

Dispite all of that, she loves the thing. And my daughter does too!

 

The mirror can get glued back on. This was always a frequent problem, on vehicles of that era.
The previous owner's feamle belt fetish is weird, though. Who knows what skeletons are buried in his parent's back yard. Your wife probably finds her new ride somewhat creepy?

 

Seatbelts were made by Firestone, TRW, and a couple others, and so replacements from GM, Ford and Dodge trucks should suffice till you can find stock Jeep replacements...unless those early '80s Jeep belts were made not to fit on purpose.
The gauge fuse may be either blown or be schmutzy, in which case, scrubbing the contacts with a brass-bristle brush should restore continuity. If power delivery is not a problem, then the rear connector(s) may need cleaning on the cluster, if you want to do that work.

 

AMCs were always grabbags, meaning that they used parts from the Big Three. There's nothing wrong with that, in my book. It's just to say that they're the last company of which I would suspect of using seatbelts which are of unusual patent origin

 

And also, this era AMC was not known for its electrical quality. My dad's AMC from this timeframe caused him so much grief because of it...

And I must admit I find it downright odd that someone would take out just the female seat belts. But I've got 3 cars here with the same problem, someone went to the time and effort to remove them on 2 of the cars and the 3rd someone just chopped them out. I mean... were they really in the way that much? Who doesn't drive with their seatbelt on these days anyways???

That's the usual excuse thieves give to cops wanting to arrest them. What really happens is that since more and more households have been using dryers, much less female intimate laundry has been gotten hung out on lines. The garments that still hang today are those belonging to those who can't afford a dryer. Since intimate garment thieves mostly have no interest in stealing Honey Boos's Mother's-sized garments, they have been substituting their fetishes, through illegally entering vehicles for the purpose of chopping out their female seatbelt ends. Am I right? This is similar to how conventional smokers now resort to vaping which sounds silly when they do it on talk radio

 

I've put about 50 miles on it and the wife another 40 or so. I've fixed the speedometer, seems the cable was unattached. as for the other gauges, they're all 6v gauges and the reducer is in the coolant temp gauge. I guess it's a common issue and the solution is a new gauge.
As for the seatbelts, I found a gentalman who is parting one out and is offering the whole set of males, females, and all associated trim for $150.
I've followed the instructions below and got the engine running pretty good. you can tell its worn out because it's no power house and it stumbles on idle some times. but, for what it is, it runs pretty smooth and quiet.

Thank you all for all of your help. I'm sure i will continue tinkering on this as time goes on, but for now we're going to wash it and enjoy it. I will post up when I replace the coolant gauge with results.

 

If all guages fail, as you claimed, it's a faulty ballast or step-down resistor which is feeding all of those guages. If you reolace only that, everything should be fine
