This is about the time of the year that we typically get about a week of real cold.
But the days are starting to get longer and we're just getting over the "hump".

Thanks, Fat......the temps I give are Fahrenheit. I have trouble comparing that to Celsius in different degrees. I know zero is freezing in C but 32 above zero is freezing in F. But, it seems that the spread changes at different temps. Doesn't Canada use Celcius?

I hate winter and never more than when I have trouble with the furnace. Got home from work on Monday and no heat. Service technician got it working on Tuesday morning $276.00, but implied that it might not continue working till spring without another $700.00 in repairs, which he couldn't do at that time and it would take 2 or 3 business days to get parts. I didn't schedule the additional work. Last night I got home and again no heat. This time they couldn't get it going again, but still charged $115 for the visit. Rather than spend another $700.00 on the existing 17 year old furnace, I decided on a new furnace for $3200.00 which will be installed Tuesday. We won't have any temperatures above freezing between now and then. Went out and bought two electric space heaters and getting ready to go borrow two more from work. I'm afraid of pipes freezing, especially since the house sits on a crawl space. I've got all the faucets dripping indoors but the outdoor faucets won't budge and I'm not forcing them. They may already be frozen since I'm sure the pipes leading to them in the crawl space are alot colder.
For right now its 52 degrees in the house. I expect it'll be colder by morning even with the space heaters.
I have a gas log fireplace that I always figured would be a great backup heat source if the furnace ever failed. But I haven't used it in probably 8 years and couldn't get the pilot light lit. DOH!!

Damn Jim, that blows! I have 3 electric and 2 Kerosene heaters as backups and keep 10 gallons of kero in the shed just for emergencies like the furnace taking a dump or the power going out.

Woke up to a whopping -17F this morning, Old Roadie was not happy with me for trying to wake her up. She acted like her battery was dead, then after cranking for 30 some seconds, acting like the battery was dead, she came to life with a slight low end knock, Oil pressure light, Coolant Level light and a Air Bag light glowing an angry red. After a few second the knock went away, lights went out and she acted normal. Damn leather seats sucked the life right out of me and the suspension was so stiff she acted like she didn't have any and man did she creak and thump on the bumps. When I goto to work, the 9 miles away at the bottom of the hill, the temp outside was at 6F, thats a 23F difference from the top of the hill to the bottom near the Lake Erie shore. They have it made down there, they have maybe 8" of snow on the ground and mine in the yard is up to my nuts. But to listen to them bunch of damn whiners that live down there, you would think they have 30 feet on the ground!

23 degree difference just by driving down the hill 9 miles to work. Wow, thats like my brother's commute was for several years up until a few months ago. Yup. He would leave work and it might be 85 degrees. By the time he got to home at the top of the hill, the temperature was more like 72. And that was year round. Winter or Summer. He lived in Hawaii.
