Yeah, the "not your father's Oldsmobile" ad campaign years. These never were *bad* cars, but they never were *inspiring* cars either. We drove these in high school and you couldn't kill them, they'd almost always start and ran fine. Just like a slightly more refined and powerful K-car, perfect transportation and not a whole lot else.

Sharp looking A-body. I'd drive it.

I'm interested to see what this one goes for. These things were ubiquitous in the 80s and 90s, and the market for all this stuff just keeps going up and up. The funny thing is the people affecting the market on these doesn't seem to be as much my generation (in my 40s) who grew up riding in these as kids, but the younger generation in their teens and 20s.

Oldsmobile did tremendous damage to the brand by labeling half its models a 'Cutlass' of some sort by the 1990s, no matter how forgettable the car was. The last "Cutlass" was a rebadged Malibu. Not surprising the Olds make died prior to the 2008 GM bankruptcy.

I’m curious too. I have the Buick century version of this car. It’s a 96 model and has a few more options like rear wiper and duel power seats. Believe it or not when I drive my Buick I get more attention than my Vette, mustang or Impala SS…and by mostly like people in their 40’s. They always have a story that their parents or grandparents had one…or their friends, etc. they actually drive pretty nice for a generic front driver from the 90’s. My Buick has about 86k on the clock but looks like 25k. I think I paid somewhere around 5500 for it like 2 years ago.

Yeah, that's pretty common actually. The vast majority of the public are not car people, so the cars that catch their attention tend to be common, everyday models that they either owned or rode in in the past, and are cars that they have (for whatever multitude of reasons) developed an emotional association with. Which is why they'll often come up and share their story about it.

There's a YouTube channel I watch and this guy owns all kinds of Chargers, Roadrunners, Dusters, etc., but he says the one car he has that always gets 10 times as many looks, thumbs up and people coming up to him to talk about it is his original white 1964 Plymouth Valiant 4-door with a slant six in it. Paint chips, dents and all. He gets all kinds of people giving him the thumbs up and coming up to him at gas stations or grocery store parking lots just to share stories about how they owned one, or how they have memories of a family member driving them around in one, etc.

But due to the sheer volume of common cars on the road, those are always the cars that develop more stories (as a whole) than the performance models. Literally 95%+ of the public have never, or will never own a more performance oriented car in their lifetime, but they'll always own a more "pedestrian" bread and butter car, and those are the cars most people make their memories with. But it's always cool when other people have an appreciation for what you drive, and who can share a story or two about it. :)

I have a ‘94 98 Regency that was my aunts last car. It’s only got 57,000 on it. Nothing special, kinda ugly but man I love love love that car and it drives like a dream. These ‘80’s and ‘90’s cars to me were the zenith of luxury, ride, and room. And not bad economy either.

The 98 Regency was a bigger car than this one. This is the "mid" size and the 98 was the "full" size for the Olds lineup. And they are great riding cars, easy to park, AND good on gas. The best part about them is no one knows about them so you can usually get them super cheap.

Well not sure it was smart, but I guess I’m the new owner of this lovely wagon. $$7300ish I think is still fairly reasonable. Gonna maybe fix the golf ball dent, and daily drive it. No snow here in NM. Figured it was $800 better than a K car, and it’s a wagon.

Congratulations! Like I said I have the Buick version, and I absolutely love it. I don’t daily drive it but I will run errands on the weekends with it. One of the things I like the most about it is that even though the car is a 1996, with the exception of the header panel, air bag steering wheel and 90’s drive train (3100 V6) it is really a 1982 car. Looks older but has a smoother more powerful drive train than the 82 model it shares so much with.

Oh…and if you find a solution for the rear bumper filler let me know. Mine is in about the same condition as this one…2 cracks and some warpage…I was thinking about getting it 3 D printed

Yeah the Escort was $8 gs. Forgot about it. Would so rather have this, and it has air. Yeah there is a company in Florida that I think makes replacements. Gonna get the lay of the land when it gets here. Interesting cracks. Wonder if they’re caused from getting in and out of the back seat. ??? Who knows. That, and the dent looked to be about the only issues. I’ll keep you posted.
