Thanks 442, but I've never lurked on a site unless I was curious about something, and then joined to offer a guy a missing piece to take his project to the next level. FMC probably, secretly has the wagonitis virus.:rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:

The next thing you know, he might convert one of his Caddies into some Longer-Roof.:rofl:

Great job and what a cool idea! Not that it matters, please no roof rack! Sunroof yes, roof rack no. The car looks so clean!

This should really be in the thread "What a Dumba$$!" :yup:

A few days ago, I painted my exhaust manifolds and oil pan.

Yesterday, I was all set to start putting things back together. The oil pan would need to be first, since the engine is raised up and shimmed with wooden blocks for clearance.

I had a new cork pan gasket and rear seal, freshly painted pan, and perfectly clean block, oh, and 18 freshly painted bolts.

All set! What could go wrong? Plenty!

My service manual said to put a few dabs of Permatex gasket sealer on the block facing, and put the gasket in place, then put the pan in place and screw it down.
It should have just said "screw it up!" :slap:
Before it was all over, I was definitely saying "SCREW IT!" :taz:

 I figured that, since I hate a leaking oil pan, that a little Permatex sealant is OK, so more must be better, right? Wrong!

I put on a nice bead of sealant, then the gasket, and then some more of the wonderful black Permatex. Screwed it all together, and the error of my ways all too soon became obvious. The dang blasted gasket, split apart, and EVIL black goo was everywhere! Did I say EVIL? Oh yeah! :slap::slap::slap:

I spent the rest of yesterday, which was beautiful BTW, cleaning up this diabolical mess! Had to soak the bolts in thinner to clean them up, and repaint them. Luckily, I managed to clean up my oil pan without damaging it.

Something so simple, I screwed up royally! :(

I ordered a new gasket, which arrived this morning (thanks Pep Boys:thumbs2:)
just in time for the total monsoon today has been! Oh, what perfect timing. :disagree:

What have we learned here, boys and girls?
I may be an ok bodyman, but I sure as heck ain't no mechanic!

    David :)

David, David, David, on the oil pan if you use any sealant use sparingly otherwise the ooze on the inside of the pan will eventually break off and clog the pickup causing a bad drop in oil pressure. Think of all the ooze that you saw on the outside! Imagine the inside.

When my Ranger was manufactured Ford thought it was a great idea to not use a gasket at all but a sealant instead. At 56k miles it all had to come apart due to low oil pressure and the pickup was all but blocked.

    Good luck the next try...

Live and learn! :p I guess if I was going to make a stupid mistake, I'm glad it went so wrong. :whew: I'd hate to have all that stuff clogging up my engine. :yup:

Nothing noteworthy. Still putting everything together on my engine, and that is a slow process. First, figuring out where things go, then cleaning and painting them, time spent screwing them up and redoing them, well, it's slow going. But I'm getting there slowly but surely. My next days off are wed and thurs, so hopefully the rain will have moved out by then, and I will get some good work done. David : )
