    holiday update

No pics today, as I was busy ALL day with the tailgate and power window!!!, worked with my buddy Glenn again trying to get the motor installed and the glass all aligned and everything else aligned!!!!!

It took a while as you have to adjust the sliders that hold the glass from side to side, those same sliders have a second adjustment to regulate how far away from the body of the tailgate you want the window.

You also have to adjust each arm of the motor by going to the top of the cycle and assuring the teeth catch at the top (end) of the run of the teeth, then you have to adjust where the motor mounts to the tailgate itself so that the glass is square!! WHEW

Then we had to go up and down a few times then adjust the rails on the actual car body, finally put the skin and the arms on and done, or so I thought.................. When I took the motor off of the assembly (arms) I put it back on the mount upside down so the wires wouldn't reach where they had to go through the skin....SO we had to take out the glass again and flip the motor. After that everything seemed ok except that I really need to take off the skin and dynomat it as it is really tin-ee, Also some people have suggested cutting an access tot he motor in case of power failure, I am not sure how I could do that and keep it clean?????? only 6 hours and done , LOL

    Anyway pretty happy with todays progress;

    See you Friday

And I think I can help anyone with tailgate problems LOL

Blacksnake- I have a question for you. When your friend messed with your horns and got them to work, do you know what he did? I am having the same issue on my 61'. I really want to use them but cannot seem to get them to sound

    purely cosmetic

Well today was productive, but as always it seems to go too slow, I really want to get this thing on the road!!

So today, I had several things in mind when I got there then, I went off in several different directions, LOL. Bottom line I got a lot of stuff done....................to the outside that is.

I installed the COMET lettering on the hood as well as the single letters on the rear quarters. I installed the chrome above the back window and along the pillars in the back of the roof.

Then I moved into the engine bay and tidied up some of the wiring and added a bunch of clips.

Also re-installed the ignition switch as I think it was a bad one

Finally put in some antifreeze instead of all water.

    I grounded the gas tank.

And I put the rear tail lenses in. I cant install the rear trim because I think the tailgate will have to be re-painted,,,:-(

AND>>>>>>>>>>>>I cant remember what else...But it was 7 hours and it was a good day, here are some pics.

    Little work on Monday

I took Monday to go and work on the wagon since I had been gone for a couple weeks. I had installed the carpet and some padding before i left. The padding that came with the carpet only covered the foot well area not under or behind the back seat. So............I bought more pad back with a heat shield and glued it down every inch where there was none, lol.

I also used this material on the firewall to help with heat and noise (on top of the dyna mat) so hopefully Ol' Kathy will be very quiet and very cool.

    Here are a few pics

The material I used for pad/heat shield
    [IMG]

Installed, the ugly colored pad is what came with the carpet kit

And a shot of the first morning in Cancun as the sun was trying to come up, it was pretty great weather........now back to the grind

See you Friday, hope to have a pic on the road??? Or at least around the parking lot, lol

Even though it's a "well equipped" Mercury I think you either should forget using the beauty rings. I think it looks great without the rings. It wasn't uncommon back then to have "fancy" cars without the rings especially since you have blackwall tires. The dark red wheels look great and you should show them off.

    Update

    Update

So I eneded up taking the tailgate off for a repaint. I was planning on just giving the painter the car but decided I could get her almost completely done by the time the gate came back, plus the car always gets so dusty at the painters. So I had to take off the skin, take out the motor and all the adjustments made on the glass UGHHH

I also set the carpet in for final install, it had been laying in the floor but not secured. I spray glued the rear only. the front had been placed but I screwed in the corners with a flat head screw. Its an old trick and practically buries the screw, a bit of red paint on the head if and when necessary.

I also started to cover the rear wheel wells with the red vinyl, pretty tough to get on without a wrinkle, I only got one side partially on as it needs to dry before I can stretch the rest on. I will however have a seam but I have an idea for that too. Seat belts will be here on Monday. Front dash (dual coil) front speaker came in, but radio (custom Auto sound) is still a ways off .

I need to get the seat belt eye bolts powder coated....I am sure there are other things but this is boring with no pics, I will try to get more pics this week.

This wagon will be beautiful when completed with your level of attention to detail. Thanks for the update.

    pics pics pics

well I went to pick up the tail gate today, needless to say it wasn't up to snuff there was a mis-communication between the painter and his employee...........and me. No big deal it will get done. He also painted some interior parts over again for me and they were not dry when I went over.......so I did other stuff. Here are some pics n descriptions, not all necessarily done yesterday and today but all since I have been back from Mexico..

These are the seat bolt retainers, Old school, and the small piece in the middle is the cover for the green dot gear indicator on the column
    [IMG]

I covered the spare tire cover in vinyl to match the interior... here it is laid in place. I also attempted to cover the wheel humps in vinyl today, that is how they came in the 404 model, I had to do them in 3 pieces to keep out the wrinkles, I am going to have the interior guy sew some fake stitches onto the (seams) and glue in the third pieces next week
    [IMG]

I made this piece from fiber board and cover it in vinyl, it is not supposed to round the corner towards the tailgate but I have not located that piece yet so until then this will have to do, I almost like it better than the metal piece that is supposed to go in the corner, LOL
    [IMG]

Here is a view of both wheel humps and the carpeted mat in the cargo area and NO TAILGATE, ;-(
    [IMG]

    The sunvisors installed
    [IMG]

Dash pad as it is laid down before the trim
    [IMG]

And after the trim is installed and everything is in place, I HAVE TO SAY I LOVE THIS OLD CRAP IT IS REALLY COOL, when it goes together good, lol
    [IMG]

And a view of the wind lace finally laid in its correct place with all the metal trim pieces holding it where it really is supposed to go, and the door handles and arm rests installed
    [IMG]

Well thats it for now hopefully the tailgate will be done next week as well as the interior pieces so I can finally drop the seats in, have a great weekend and pray for the rain to go away we are supposed to go to NASCAR on sunday ;-) Ryan
