Tons of Pics in the Photobucket album. Way to many photos to upload as attachments so I loaded them into an album and here is the link.

    1964 AMC Album

I am going to schedule to fly out and drive this home unless you guys come up with any big objections.

What's not to like? That's a very nice car! Do you need to get permission?
I say, if the price is right, go for it, AMC wagons are a hot commodity...

Just saw your earlier post... I commented there, too. This sure looks like a solid car. According to one of the other replies, it's also a very rare find. I also understand those AMCs were pretty reliable, durable and relatively economical (for a car that size.) If his price is right, and you have the means, I don't see how you go wrong, even if the mill needs work, it appears to be in very good condition.

Apparently, I can't pick it up and drive it home. The seller just told me that the plates don't stay on the car when they sell it in Utah. Is that true? I will have to ship it here and register it in my name. Only thing is that means I pay before getting the car. Also, she said she would send the title after I wired the money over. She works on classic cars for a living. I have seen the website. The change in plans just made me wary.

Asking $2900 for it. They say they have another guy waiting but they are holding off until I make a decision.

I don't understand. She want's you to pay for the car before you go get it?
I don't remember how Calif. law is on licensing the car, esp. form out of state but here, you have 30 days to register, license and insure any vehicle with a clear title. I thought that was kind of the same everywhere. We sold a car to an in-law from Cheyenne that was licensed and registered in L.A. he was able to drive it home without plates. As long as you have the title and registration, and a date of purchase (probably a notary stamp wouldn't hurt, as a legal witness) I'd think you'd be okay driving the car. You'd have the documentation should Johnny law decide to bug you. However, with all the weird laws and new rules popping up in the 10 years since I moved, I wouldn't know how to advise you. Call the DMV, they'd be very helpful I'm sure (Ha ha). You might even check with CHP, Nevada and Utah Highway Patrol regarding this. It couldn't hurt. Don't just take her word, she's trying to unload the car.

I'd want the title upon payment, in hand same day as purchase. Can you give them cash for the full amount? Get her to come down a little? That's the ticket.

$2900 seems like a great price, you better jump on it or someone else will. Don't let anyone who wants a 'good' derby car get it.

re: 4speedwagon's comment on your other post...

"My book did not give me the answer but I did see that only 2,995 Ambassador wagons were built in 1964!!!(y) Could have bucket seats with a console ! I think they were still built on the Classic..."

I am currently getting transport quotes and I have emailed Utah Highway Patrol. For my own comfort I may go there with some cash even if I am shipping it. That way I get the title in hand. Small price for comfort.

There should be no reason why you can't drive it home. Call the Utah and California DMV's for guidance on what to do in this situation. You're close enough that you can save quite a bit on money by driving it home.

Get Utah temporary plates. If, for some reason (can't imagine any), they don't issue those in Utah.....get temps from your state. If YOUR state won't do it....get the VIN from her, go to your DMV and register the car and get plates, fly out to get it. If you don't like it when you get there you are out money but not that money plus the cost of the car. And you can transfer those to the wagon you do buy. I have done this a few times. Just because of the way she is handling this, suddenly, I would not just send the money and have it shipped. I would BRING the money in one of the ways mentioned. If you like the car and want it...tell her it's a deal and you are on your way in a couple of days. You can tell her exactly when at the time you have temps or plates. If she insists that you send money immediately and pressures you with a buyer in the wings, I would be very suspicious. I like what I see but I don't like what I hear.

I would inquire with the DMV in the county where you are purchasing the car. You should be able to get a temporary plate for transport. That's what I did when I bought a car in FL. However you may have to pay the sales tax in Utah.

I would love to drive it home. I am going to try to get an email that I can print out from Highway Patrol and DMV.
That way if I run into any hotheads I can calmly present my paperwork and be as prepared as possible.

Ah. I was typing for a long time while on the phone when your posts were made. I will try to get the temp plates. Looks like Utahs DMV is only open Mon-Thu.

Get temps. Preferably from your state. See my previous post.

If you're lucky, you might find that someone like SMS Auto Fabrics
    http://www.smsautofabrics.com/
might have the upholstery material you'll need for the driver's seat. It appears that there might be a missing or damaged upper side molding piece on the right rear door. If so, it should be the same as a four door sedan 64 Ambassador ( thought that may still be a difficult part to find in a salvage yard).
Looks like a real nice clean car over all.
