This Comet is way too rare for somebody not to restore. I think we had a thread on here at one time talking about whether they even offered a Comet Squire prior to 1963. This clearly answers that question! Wish I had more room. Wish I had more money. Wish I had more time. Wish I had that Comet!!
To be correct, it's not a 'Squire', it's a 'Villager' . Also, it appears to be a 1962, not a '61. Looking at a '61 Comet brochure, i don't think they had a 'woody' in '61 - same for the Falcon. -- Still investigatin'......... ......................................... Edit: I found a source on the internet that shows a '62 Comet brochure. http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Mercury/1962_Mercury/dirindex.html (you have to then click on '1962 Comet' brochure' to go to the actual brochure pages... Interestingly, the brochure makes no mention of and does not display any pictures of the 'Villager' wagon with wood. This leads me to believe that the 'Villager' was a mid-year offering. This is also the same situation for their sporty 'S-22' coupe with the bucket seats - I saw pics of a separate short 4-page brochure just for the S-22 model. Way back in my memory, I seem to recall Ford making a big deal of special mid-year model releases. I specifically remember Ford bringing out the slant-back style hardtops on the big Fords mid-year in 1963..., and these slant-back Falcon (and Comet) hardtops came out at the same time....
KK, you're right and technically, it's not a Mercury either. Originally, the Comet was going to be an Edsel, but since the Edsel died in 1960, the Comet came out as just that, a Comet; not a Ford, not an Edsel, not a Mercury. It wasn't until 1962 when it became the Mercury Comet.
Correct. The 1959 Edsel wagon was named Villager. The villager named was carried to the Comet wagon. Funny how that Mercury used the Villager name again on the Nissan-built minivan..
Doh! I knew Squire wasn't the right name, but Villager didn't come to mind the other night. I also knew about the whole Edsel Comet thing, but again...it didn't come to mind. No car trivial pursuit for me right now...I blame heat stroke! David
Right again, KK. They did introduce the new roofline to the full size Fords in the middle of the '63 model year. They did it again with the Mustang, bringing it out in April of '64 as a 64 1/2. I remember riding my bike to Westfield Ford every day for a month to see the first Mustang. Finally one arrived and at 10 yrs old, I was blown away. It looked like a rocket!!
