1960 Mercury Commuter Station Wagon Project for sale on BaT Auctions - ending November 21 (Lot #171,438) | Bring a Trailer
I think this is a Colony Park in drag. It has the trim and scripts. It’s missing the rear door hash marks and the upper roof rail trim. No interior it’s hard to tell. If this is a numbers matching car then it is indeed a Commuter as the 430 was standard on the Colony Park. I do have to say what a coincidence that this was Sultana white over Javelin Bronze as that it my combination. There’s a lot to do here. Plus 77-A denotes Commuter. Colony Park was 77-B
Evidently obtained the outer trim rails on the salvage market....... Some time down the line, this will eventually be advertised as an 'ORIGINAL COLONY PARK'... Kudos to the current owner for not attempting that now.
Amen. Probably before that happens it’ll be referred to as the original Family queen truckster. lol. I agree that an unscrupulous owner would either advertise it as such, or use language like believed to be ….. people rightly or wrongly are forced now to do their own due diligence when buying this or any car. Decoding the vin is essential, especially if you’re not familiar with a specific brand or model.
Possibly, but it's not like we're talking about a slant six Barracuda that somebody dropped a Hemi into and made it look all original. I would imagine the overall condition of the car would be a larger factor and the difference in sales price between a Commuter and Colony Park both in equal condition wouldn't be that great.
Actually with the production difference, the Colony Park commands a 50-70% premium over its Commuter counterpart. The difference drops after 1960, but the Hardtop 1957-1960 models have maintained a very healthy sales price vs the same Commuter series, and against pre ‘57 and post ‘60 Models. Obviously condition, and options also play a big part, but pound for pound the Colony Park had an obvious trim difference both inside and out, plus the Colony Park also had a standard power plant (430) versus the 312 in the Commuter. When you add AC and Mercomatic 3 speeds the difference moves the needle on both series.
Yeah sometimes total projects can be a tough sell. The problem is if you convert it to a commuter then there is a lot of body fill under those 36-38 screw holes per side, plus interior work. Lots of $$$$ before you’re really done with something.
