Ok, so I got the tank hung yesterday. I got her down tight but the new tank is a bit smaller than the original so there is some slop in the middle ….. and I added rubber to fill in the gap.

Tomorrow the heads get bolted down and I start running the long lines for gas and brake.

I think that's what your problem is...the factory material is missing from the strap, and perhaps off of the body also?

I think it is a combination. Slightly smaller tank and missing material. I added some rubber sheets on top of the tank for insulation agains squeak and rubbing and some rubber bungie strips to the straps. She ain’t going nowhere for sure.

[IMG] How to install a heater valve
So I got my heater core out for a rebuild/replacement. Found out I have what is called a ‘dole’ style heater control valve. I would like to replace it with a valve that is inline and inside the engine compartment. How do I do that? Obviously I need a new core (either have mine modified and rebuilt or a new early mustang one) but I don’t have a vacuum set up for the port to open or close the valve. Does someone have pics or a description I can work off of. Better yet, what parts did you use.

    Thanks

    mike

Some underhood valves are vacuum (usually installed on older cars with A/C), the rest are manual cable. If you don't have A/C, the manual cable should do you fine.

No A/C at the moment but she will get it in the future.

I think that A/C is a great update to any vintage car restoration.

She came with it at some point in her history so I found an original under dash unit and will use that with new compressor evaporator etc. UPDATE: Got the old fuel line out and will install a new one hopefully next week. Also found 6 more bullet holes in the fire wall. I REALLY REALLY want to know how they did this, the wife thinks there was an argument, since she came from Vegas I am leaning towards a 'hold my beer' moment.

I tried to find if you posted what the particulars were on your engine, but I didn't find anything. What's going in?

I managed to buy a 312 and fordo from a Fairlane 500. It is slightly hopped up, cam wise, and should last me till well after I am long gone if I take care of it right. Tim McMaster does things right.

I got the heater core back and he 'welded' the original valve to it. So I have to put the heater valve in the engine bay. So off to plan where I am going to put things.

Nice on the 312. As for the heater and controls, can you at least mock things up temporarily, to make sure all will fit without cutting anything?

That is the plan while the engine is still out-lots of space in there. First thing though is paint and running fuel/brake long lines then heater. I will probably pull the windshield while the engine is still out as well-just in case I have to cut and weld there is space for me to move around in.

That and you don't run the risk of cracking the windshield. My friend Steven did that on a Ranger heater core job. Busted it on the inside with a socket on a wobbly connected to a rattle gun...the socket slipped off....
