I've owned 200 + cars since 1966,, and rebuilt ALOT of carbs,,, but this Rambler one-barrel is refusing to accept the rebuild kit,,, it wont idle, but it did before I rebuilt it... then a friend had one on the shelf,, got it,,, it ran for 20 minutes up and down the driveway,, then boom it suddenly stopped and upon restart it wont idle,, doing same as other carb.. Has New fuel pump... new lines,, new clear fuel filter,, and the Holley has the CLEAR glass fuel bowl on the front of carb. so I can see if its low on fuel or whatever. last attempt is soak carb overnight in a professional parts cleaner solvent to clean up any passages thats clogging on BOTH carbs.. wow.. IF THIS keeps going on!! I have another 360 AMC & transm awaiting a trasnplant... AND wifes says : ( whatever you think Honey) Really I'm going to stay original if at all possible. Won't make the NATs in this car at this rate,,, guess the 62 401 cid has to go instead..
You say it was idling before you rebuilt it. That tells me something happened when you did the rebuild. I assume you compared all the new gaskets with the old ones, to make sure all the little holes were in the right places. A wrong gasket can cause tons of problems. Is it not idling from lack of gas or too much? You did put the weight on the pump discharge ball? Probably something very simple. But, if another carb ran ok for a while........sounds like two completely different problems.
SNOOTER: Gas tank was cleaned several years ago,,the clear fuel bowl on the front of the Holley 1 bbl indicates good gas.. not bad enough to varnish in one day. Hot or cold same results!! Carb has been apart twice since the rebuild looking for a flaw,, the gaskets are correct as far as the hole alignment. ( called "Daytona" carb they said a bad run of these were found, not all caught,, said: CHECK gasket Alignment,, its fine!!!) Yes,, sound like 2 problems,, it does have POWER brakes maybe the booster has a vacuum leak causing this. Wed. the carb is being soak overnight in the solvent..then reassembled so it will be friday or weekend before and new results are reported.. Thanks for the ideas.. PHIL
Did you observe the glass fuel bowl while it was acting up? Any tiny bubbles in there? If it isn't what Andy said it MAY be a very slight leak in the line or other part you replaced that's sucking air a wee bit after it uses the fuel that is already pumped and there. Or, maybe sucking a little sand you didn't know about that is, at first, settled. As an aside....I thought that those glass bowls were dangerous on those. Heard that they occasionally blow up.
I have already sprayed starting fliud around searching for a Vac leak.. The only bubbles found are as the gas enters the glass front bowl but quicky desolve when float levels out.. The glass bowl is like a heavy Mason jar quality/thick,, and all the years I ve had Ramblers never heard about possible bowl mishaps. UPDATE; last night I needed to move the 59 out and move 62 in to prep for the Nat's on Aug 5-8th,, well it decided to half-way-idle enough to switch cars around.
Didn't they have vacuum wipers too? I think electrical wipers were still an option until 1960. Have you seen these sites? Some decent tech info: http://www.route66rambler.com/tiki-index.php?page=Route+66+Rambler+HQ http://www.amcyclopedia.org/ This is a Canadian site at a university - no registration required. http://www.science.uwaterloo.ca/~afleming/
Yes Norm, it has vac wipers,( source-disconneted for the test). Vacuum wipers were standard on Ramblers up til about 69 then AMC used them in 70 I think, but electric was optional around the 63 models.. Just a note Ramblers used the closed driveshaft longer than any U.S. maker, last year was 1966.
So getting a 12 volt wiper motor for them must be a real scramble. I can see why folks in the Northwest US would likely not have ordered theirs with the standard wipers. Between the mountains and rainfall, they'd trade in for a scooter. There must be a trouble-shooting book or section on this issue you've got with it right now. And I thought that Buicks were the last ones with their 'Torque Tube' driveshaft in the 1950's. hmmm...
I know what! Go out and show her a couple of these pics! You know how these old gals get after 50! http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z13597/Nash-Rambler.aspx http://rides.hotrod.com/ride/1180948/rambo1960/1960/american-motors/rambler/index.html http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicles/hrdp_0709_1964_amc_rambler_classic/index.html Does this sound similar? The proposed analysis and solutions are at the bottom of the page: http://en.allexperts.com/q/American-Motors-2560/2008/1/Dying-65-Rambler-American.htm
Oo! Oo! An original AMC Tech's Q&A! http://en.allexperts.com/q/American-Motors-2560/indexExp_52606.htm A short outlook joke. This family of 4 are invited to participate in an attitude study with their twin boys. They go to the psychology labs at the university and speak with the Psyche Prof and agree to let their 7 year olds into the test. Two rooms with mirrored glass. The one room is full of new toys in the boxes! The other is piled up with horse-pucky! In goes one twin, into the 'new toy' room. On goes the tape and the parents are observing with the speaker on! The kid is ranting and ticked off!?! "What's with adults! Don't they know that this packaging is dangerous to the environment?!!!" Couldn't they at least have unpacked the toys! Look at these toys with Lead Paint! Are they trying to kill me or what!" The folks are embarrassed, but they walk over to the other window. The other twin is using his plastic shovel like a tazmanian devil! Covered in 'sweet violets'. The folks can't believe he's working so hard, flailing in all this crap! On goes the speaker... All they can hear is their son saying, "with all this horsesh!t, there has to be a pony in there somewhere!" :2_thumbs_up_-_anima
This car KNOWs the fate of a V8 swap,,, so it better run after the rebuild,,, ( any reason to do a swap).. TSM has no answers about this. Thanks Norm for the links. they were good..
Phil, have a look at the AllExperts alphabetical topics list! Incredible as a first look diagnostic site. http://en.allexperts.com/q/a.htm So I checked Ford. 3 categories - Ford Repair, Ford Mustang and just Ford. No Mercury categories. No Capri either, but Car Upholstery topics. Very interesting.
