I'm with you, Krash...this confuses me. I had a '67 CS with the dual facing seats, and I didn't know the rear facing seat was even offered. But Ford was the king of wagons, so maybe they wanted to please everyone by offering both styles. David
This one looks like it's kind of a strippy since it's got no wood and the little hubcaps. I'm surprised it was on the showroom floor; I always used to be the nicest cars in my inventory on there. Although, now that I think about it, if a car had been around for a long time and I had to get it out of the inventory, I'd put it on the floor in the hopes of getting rid of it. Maybe that was the case with this Merc.
I had a '90 Taurus wagon that had a rear-facing third seat. Made my kids carsick every time they rode in it.
I had a 1976 Mercury Montego Wagon that had the rear facing seat. Maybe the Mercs faced rear & the Fords faced sideways.
I have to wonder because the Comutor was the bace model, was this rear facing seat a bare bones third seat option?
The Montego was a mid-sized wagon. Only the BIG wagons were available with the dual side-facing rear seats.
Here's a page from a '67 Mercury brochure. It clearly shows the dual side-facing rear seats. Didn't see anything in the text about a 'regular' third seat being available. I'm starting to think that this one that's for sale was a 6-passenger that's been retro-fitted. http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_itemId=57103
Retro fitted...I kinda think you may be correct KK. It's a small pic of that rear seat BUT if you look hard some thing does'nt seem rite. To me it looks like the bace (where your bum sits) is to high, almost (?) has a look that if the seat was folded down, it would not close properly for the cargo area. ??
I'd have to check with the parents on exact year, but we had an early to mid-70's Ford Country Squire with a rear-facing seat. Used to get in trouble all the time for making faces and impromptu '#1' finger signs from it....... ---edit--- brother corrected me; it was very early 70's Mercury. And he confirmed it was a rear-facing seat. I need to dig through the parents pictures. I know there's a pic of me and my sister sitting there looking out with our dog between us.
I believe that the dual side-facing rear seats came out with the new wagons in '65 IIRC, so the wagons up to and including '64 would have rear-facing seats.
