Cause maybe your back window rolls down, giving you the wonderful magic 3 way tailgate? That’s only my assumption.
I believe it's leather. Couldn't find a 1981 brochure on-line, but the '80 brochure does mention leather was available, so I would assume that would be accurate for 1981 as well.
Does anything in the US have actual leather say, post WWII? It’s my understanding that the legal definition of leather was stretched to include a dyed cowhide emulsion sprayed on to a polyester/synthetic backing. I have been buying ‘leather’ cars for years but the back of the seating surface is never quite like an actual leather glove or coat. Well, I did have a King Ranch ford. That might have actually been real leather but I was never convinced. Tell me how to tell leather from pleather and I can go check a pile of cars out in the yard. I hav just assumed they are all fake.
First off I love your pun... the definition of leather was stretched..... I know some of the “leather” cars I have from the ‘80’s a lot of the seat backs are still made from vinyl. But the leather seems real on the seat surfaces themselves. Don’t know. That’s a good question
A lot of brochures over the years have clearly stated ‘leather-trimmed seating’.... The pun wasn’t intentional... just the late night coming out.....
From what I understand, there's lots of different 'grades' of automotive leather. They leather you'll find in a Rolls Royce ('Connolly' - ?) will be much thicker than the leather you will find in a 'regular' vehicle. Also, some of the upholstery surfaces may be substituted with simulated leather - vinyl.
The key is the term "leather seating surfaces" meaning the actual backs and bottoms of the seat - the parts you actually touch when you are seated. The rest of it? Vinyl, at least on most cars.
