    What do these people do to these poor wagons? It is a bit crusty but probably salvageable and could look really nice.

    They haul kids around. Then it gets driven by the oldest teen still home, and handed down to other kids in succession.

    Exactly right! Back in the day, people did not buy these wagons with the intent of babying them or barely driving them so they'd look nice to people like us 30 or 40 years later. They bought them to use them, and, in most cases, these wagons had the hell used out of them. The fact that some nice examples have made it this far is something we should be happy about. But we should not be surprised that many end up looking like this one.
