Little bit concerning about what's wrong with the steering column that prevents "locking." I'm not actually clear on what doesn't lock. The doors or the steering column? I like how the odometer has 933,000 miles on it. Almost a million. Pretty good for a 1988 car. That's an average of over 37,000 miles per year since new. He does say he drives it 40 miles per day. But over 27 years and 365 days per year, that's only 394,000 miles. He's got some splainin' to do! For only $800, though, neither he nor it has to answer to much. Agreed about the lack of photos. This is another case of my-camera-can-take-only-one-photo disease.
So, if the "Lock" mechanism in the key column is the part that's busted (In the steering column) what do you think it would cost to fix?
Wow, assuming the undercarriage is in good shape, this sounds like a great buy! I'd be on this if it were closer.
I got a response from the seller already. He said it was stolen a few months back and the issue is the driver's side lock is broken. What would it take to fix that? I don't think it would be more than a $200 repair, though $200 is probably a lot higher than I expect it to actually be. He also put in another steering wheel column which wiggles between tilt settings and he thinks the car is at about 133k miles. It does have working A/C. Perhaps it wouldn't be too bad to get this and sell Dad's caravan?
It depends on the specific damage. If all there is is damage to the lock cylinder itself, then, yes, repair should be easy and relatively cheap. All that's needed is a new lock cylinder, which is about $12 at Autozone, and getting it set up for the correct key, which a locksmith can do. All you need is the effort to take the door apart to get at the cylinder. http://www.autozone.com/electrical-...chevrolet/caprice/1988/8-cylinders-6-5-7l-4bl IF, on the other hand, the thief jammed a screwdriver or something like that into the cylinder and twisted it around trying to get it out or to get the door to unlock, he might very well have damaged the metal opening in the door in which the cylinder sits, and that would require body work to repair. That could easily run several hundred dollars. We need more info or a good photo of the damage to have a better idea of cost.
If I am not mistaken I think it is owned by a member on the GMlongroof forum. I remember a thread with a wagon that looked like it. I think the guy also has a Roadmaster wagon. Don't remember the whole story but almost sure this is the same wagon. If I were close, it run good, a/c and heat worked I would probably take a chance on it if under car was decent. Just my .
For $800 one can't be too picky I think its a steal if there are no major rust issues, lock is an easy fix if there is no damage to the sheet metal. It appears it needs a front bumper filler as well.
Apparently there are holes in the gas cap, battery tray and rocker panels. The seller said he'd send more photos tonight.
You fellers are just too picky. As Festus on Gunsmoke said, if I was closer " I'd be on that like ugly on an ape."
I'm still considering it. It's about 150 miles from me though and the pickiness is (IMHO) coming from my Dad, mostly.
