Indeed, Alpine was a very high end car stereo, and I can't be absolutely certain from the picture that that's not what it is. But it also very much looks like the Radio Shack deck I described. And that means the possibility of damage due to the impedance mismatch.

As far as I'm concerned, there are too many little inconsistencies to justify in my mind the high asking price -- or any five figure price, for that matter. To someone considering this car for a "show quality driver" I would say be mindful of what kind of show you want it for. It would be docked for non-originality at most antique car shows and it wouldn't garner a great deal of interest -- other than as a curiosity -- at most custom car shows as it's simply not cutomized/high performance enough. $12K or more is a lot to pay for a car to take to casual car shows and the local cruise night. It appears it would be a very nice car for $6K - $8K, though.

Ford Definately put the tailgate washer option on '74's. I fell in love with station wagons that year when Mrs. wade, my babysitter at the time brought home her brand new 1974 Squire with the luxury group interior.. The two tone tan and saddle leather/pleather seats ... I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life..! I used to just sit and look at it. I noticed that little flip up thing on the tailgate one day and asked Mr. Wade what it was... He told me it was for window washer fluid and demonstrated how it worked. She had the exact car as featured in the brochure. I have to this day never seen another like it. I also liked the steering wheel because it had a gold laurel wreath in the center and I
Have just realized that I believe that was the steering wheel for cars with
Cruise control option... Is that correct anyone...!?

lack of interest and or seller coming down to the real world.....

Putting aside the fact that I'm cheap to begin with:p, it is a wagon and although gaining in popularity there is still only a limited market for interest, guys like us on this forum for example. I really like this wagon and would love it in my driveway yet if I had $10k and was looking for a wagon I wouldn't even look at this one or anything from the 70's for that matter.

I also wonder, we have on our site posted several drop dead condition 4 door sedans from all the big 3. I look at the links/pics and go WOW, nice car but shake my head at some of the asking prices for the fact as I personally see "It's still only a just 4 door sedan" and other members say "what a deal, if it was closer....."

Which begs the question, what is the best price for a car like this. Obviously, every seller wants to get the most money possible.
If you saw this exact wagon with a "for sale" sign on it, at what reasonable price would you run to the bank and get the cash?
Sure, if it said $1000 it would be gone in minutes, but that's not a reasonable selling price for a car of that condition.
Would you (all) snap it up at $3000? $4000? $5000? Where is the breaking point where a car goes from "oh, I'm buying that now!", to "what is that guy thinking, listing it for that much"

    Just doing some research, thanks!

As one data point, the Old Cars Price Guide lists the value of a '72 Ford Country Squire in showroom condition (which this car is not if it has 80,000 miles on it) at just under $10,000.

For the next level down, which is described as "car show" condition, the value is about $6,400. Then you do all your adding and subtracting based on the particular car in question.

This particular car has a lot going for it, so it's probably at least $6,400 and perhaps more, so a price of $7,000 or $8,000 might not be unreasonable. One would have to check the car out in person.

But if it's every bit as good as it looks, paying $7 or $8K might very well be within reason, at least going by this particular price source. Certainly if the asking price were $6,000 or below, that would be in "snap it up" territory. So that might be your "what would it take to make you run to the bank" price.

Many sellers of old cars assume that value is determined by rarity and condition. But they forget the third factor, and that's desirability. The first two being true doesn't make the third one true. Yes, this car might be in great shape, and it might be one of two left on the planet, but if no one wants it, it won't command a high price. That's the situation that plagues station wagons in particular. As much as the people who frequent this site love them, we're in a very small minority as far as the collector car world goes. That helps keep prices down for us when we want to buy one, but it doesn't help us much when we go to sell it again.

$5,000 is about what a decent paint job begins at (at least around here), and it goes up from there. It looks like a good deal, based on the photos.
