One of my favorite songs is from a band called the Bottle Rockets (from Missouri!) - they have a song called "Thousand Dollar Car" - here's a little bit of the lyrics:

My first 4 cars were all under $1,000. In fact they were all under $800...... of course that was back in the late 60's / early 70's.....

 

i remember buying several drivable cars for 300$ or less.
61 VW bug = $75

63 Oldsmobile Cutlass - $100

67 Dodge Dart GT - $200

68 Dodge Coronet - $ 100

68 Plymouth Suburban $300

Lots of good memories in those cars - especially the Dart - drove the wheels off of that - went to boneyard with 275 K miles.

Also loved the Oldsmobile - like the Dart it had the three speed on the column (my favorite)

All were perfectly drivable and inspection passable. Of course this was in the mid-late 70's.

My 86 Colony Park cost me $4,100---best car I ever had. Got my 68 Colony Park for the cost of getting it up and running. $500/$600, not really sure---second best car I've ever had. Paid thousands for my two Tauruses---would probably have been better off finding thousand dollar cars. All my other cars have been bought for less than $1,000. And they came in varying degrees of "being worth it". Bought a Ford Explorer from Impound and a Ford Aerostar out of a newspaper, to keep the wife happy. Both for less than a thousand, and both were complete and total rip offs... Gone in less than three months. All my other cars lasted for years. Sounds like these Bottle Rocketmen got a thousand dollar car like the Explorer or the Aerostar. My third best car ever? The 77 Dodge Aspenwagon---$425... I'd pay a Grand for that Pontiac, if'n I had it, and it'd probably run. And be a damn good car.

 

A-mazing for sure! Put some woodgrain on it, fix the headliner, doctor up the driver seat, it would be a real eye catcher!
