The numbers on these odometers often did not line up completely. I would believe the mileage. That is about 50,000 miles, which would be about right for the condition. Nice, too, that it is well equipped, too. The nice interior, power windows and locks. Don't know about power seats, but would not surprise me. Says it has the tow package. If so, it may have the rear disc brakes, too. All in all, a true beauty, and in my opinion, well worth every penny of the asking price.

I'm not sure what's going on with the rear Wood grain Air-deflector?
I actually think it is from a Jeep Grand Wagoneer because of the screws
in sight. Ford Never had any screws on this part. BUT, NICE WAGON!!!!!

Good eyeballsmanship, some thing is not correct with it. The rear bumper is "tweaked" also on the drivers side.

a 77 roof rack for reference, witch I don't really think the roof racks changed at all in the 70's until 79's Panther wagons. Rack looks identical to my 72 and all others I've looked at.

....unless it got torn off and this was the idea of a repair?....can't be, it just don't look correct.

    hey, hey, hey

Like 'em all... Surprised the ad doesn't mention that all of FoMoCo's largest vehicles came with ABS standard... Also came with guardrail in the doors for passenger protection... Both the 400 and the 460 were pretty abhorrent on mpg's, so it really doesn't matter which one it comes with. I'd be getting at least one, if I had the money...;)

One question...if the owner is claiming this as original equipment and no modifications or accidents then what would you say re the rest of the car?

I generally take everything said by a seller with a grain of salt. If he/she is not the original owner, and it had not belonged to a family member previously, then the 'chain of evidence' is lost, so to speak. If whatever said is backed up by paperwork, or the visible condition supports it, that just adds information.

In the case of my Safari, the seller claimed he purchased it from the original owner, an older man who just took it to car shows and such. I was given no proof whatsoever on this. The carfax was inconclusive, only showing re-registration every year, with a few notes of mileage numbers. After an inspection, I believed the claimed low 21k miles. If it was actually 121k, it was certainly well-maintained, and Carfax didn't show it.

If you inspect vehicles often enough, you will learn the 'tells' on them. Worn pedals, upholstery wear, or replacement in the driver's area; mis-matched tires, possibly indicating an odd wear problem; recent black spray paint under the hood; lots of others.

Both the roof rack and wind defector may simply be non-factory. They don't resemble the brochure pic or the '77 listed for comparison.

That said, the rest of this Merc looks very nice, aside from the rear bumper, as noted previously.

Thanks for the comments. This guy is the original owner. What is wrong with the back bumper? I am loving the look of the car but not sure what I should pay. Car has not been started in a year and not licensed or inspected for five. Yet the gas tank has been replaced last year. Owner seems like a good guy. Decisions decisions

I'd want the opportunity drive it before making an offer, especially if it has not been started in a year.
