Back in the early 70's the great majority of new cars sold were sold from 'dealer stock' - meaning they were not specifically ordered by the buyer. The dealers ordered 'unsold' units to stock their lots based on what they thought would sell well, trying to cover as many price points as possible. I would theorize that most people if shopping for a Mercury wagon would have taken a Colony Park with all the fancy wood paneling if they could afford it. If they could not, a slightly smaller but nice-looking Montego Villager might be a more attractive seller than a somewhat plain Monterey or Marquis wagon.
