No, clamshells...or clams as some members call them......were exclusive to the bigger wagons. These had a single piece lift up tailgate, the window was fixed in place also and didn't roll down as in earlier models, prolly due to the popularity of air conditioning by 1976.
Yes they did apparently, 1976 was the last year for the 455 option, the 403 was top engine in 1977. I bet 455 numbers were low on the heels of the 1973 oil embargo. From Wiki.
