I seem to see a lot of '64 Belair's and Impala's with the hood trim missing. Is it just me? Did they put them on with pipe-cleaners at the factory or something?

As I remember Impala had its own hood trim. The Chevy Bowtie was blue with white stars. Biscayne, DelRay , Brookwood and BelAir had a chrom piece but had just the word CHEVROLET. Since this isnt an Impala the hood trim is most likely not reproduced. Its a wrecking yard only item, if you can find it.

By this time ( 1964 ) the Bel Air model was the lowest end Chevrolet you could buy. Just 6 years prior Bel Air was the pride and glory of the Chevy lineup

Here in Canada, the Bel Air remained the 'one up' model for many years. The Biscayne stayed on our books as a regular model, and it was very BASIC indeed.

All 1964 full sized chevs regardless of model had the same nose trim (eybrows, hood lip and lower molding), Impala had a wind split down the ridge of the hood...was an extra option for other models. It does not have original shifter or steering wheel for that year. My guess conversion from three on the tree. Impala top of line, Belair Mid, Biscayne bottom. However My belair wagon is optioned out better than Impala as it was special order. (327, tilt, posi, PS, PB, air)
