    1961 Plmouth Lancer Wagon - $5500 (Yakima)

    Ad text:
1961 Lancer Suburban Wagon, has a aluminum S/6, Offy two 1 barrel intake, electronic ignition, single 2" exhaust. Rebuilt the front end last year, Has SBP 15" wheels with MOON caps. I also lowered it about an inch. Interior is ok. I added a roof rack this past summer. That's pretty unique in that these cars never came with a roof rack. It has a hot rod color primer sealer with a clear coat. I pretty much followed a Rat Rod theme however it's a pretty solid car.

This is not a show car. It has pretty much been a fair weather car to have fun in without worrying about getting dents and scratches. Gets a lot of attention. Drove to the Rat Rod event is Seattle several times. Seems to get fair fuel milage. It only has a 12 gallon tank which is stock. However it's a really fun car to take to cruz-ins. The car is pretty unique in that not many were built.

    Sorry, no trades"

This to me is a special wagon because of the ALUMINUM slant-six engine - very rare. Be nice if someone here grabbed it.

Very interesting. I know there were a buncha different versions of the slant 6's, was this one with the Offy intake factory original?

Anyone know if Chrysler had cooling system problems with this aluminum engine like Olds did with the 215?

Interesting read, I knew about the existence of those blocks, but I never knew the specific's Like the connecting rods being rotated 180 degree when compared to the cast iron blocks.

How much lighter are the aluminum block engines? It seems like a lot of expense for what would mostly be used in more base model cars?

Yeah, Jeff, still curious about this one. I had never heard of it until I was reading the A-body forum one day. The article didn't explain why the aluminum slant-six was developed - why would a manufacturer need iron and aluminum versions of the same engine? Was it an experiment they were selling to the general public? At this same time, Chevy was selling the Corvair and Buick Skylark / Olds F-85, both with aluminum engines. Don't recall Ford getting involved then though.....

I was cruising CL and saw it, knew instantly who's it was..........
One of these days I'd like to get a first-gen Valiant or Lancer wagon. Got the Safari now, and only room for one at the homestead.

    Good luck with the sale.

Aluminum engines are more expensive to produce than iron ones. Not only is the casting process more meticulous. The energy required for melting and managing aluminum is 3 times higher than for iron engines. I'm sure, Chrysler corporation would have had second thoughts about terminating the aluminum slant 6 project, had they become the idea when the fuel crisis began. But by then, they easily could have ordered aluminum engines through their French and Spanish affiliates (Simca/Talbot):

I'm surprised by this little known Chrysler affiliate. Check out some of that vintage Simca/Talbot eye candy: https://www.google.de/search?q=talb...280&bih=668#q=talbot+voiture+weekend&tbm=isch
