Apparently, there's no 3rd seat. Were they dfrs in 1970? I would say most likely. This is one good looking wagon indeed. As much as I like those wheels on it, I'd go back to the factory original wheel covers. As I recall, Ford and Mercury didn't offer a wheel option back then, just the regular and deluxe wheel covers. Am I right?

Yes, they would have been DFRS. I know that in the first generation of Mercury wagons where DFRS were offered ('65 - '68), Merc also offered the option of a rear facing seat, but from '69 forward I believe its DFRS or nothing. Interestingly, up until 1972 (I think) the DFRS cars were actually catalogued as a different model from the 6-passenger wagons.

Mercury did have a styled aluminum wheel option shown in the Marquis/Marauder/Monterey brochure, although it doesn't specify whether it's available on wagons, and it's not shown in the wagon brochure. It appears there were at least 3 and maybe 4 different wheel covers available for the '70 Merc. I agree with you though, the luxury (turbine style) wheel covers are the way to go on this car.

This car has some pretty rare options for the 1970 model year -- even for a Mercury. Although it doesn't have power windows (which I would think would be more common on the Merc than the Ford), it does have the AM/8 track, tilt wheel, rim blow horn, and a vinyl roof.

This is only the second '70 CP I've ever seen for sale online. The rust issues might be excusable to an enthusiast of this model. It doesn't look like it's any worse than my '70 Country Squire's when I got it (although it did cost me a bundle to get that fixed). If I didn't have my '70 CS, I'd be very tempted.

Cool car and very rare. Interval wipers?? I didn't even know that was an option on any car in 1970? I thought those come about until about 1972 or so? I bet that was a super rare option in 1970.

Off the top of my head, I seem to recall that 1969 was the first year that intermittent wipers were available as an option on the big Mercurys, as I think Mom's '69 Marquis had it.

On the big Fords, I think 1970 was the first year it was available as an option, though I've never seen one with it, so I don't know what the controls looked like. The wiper controls were completely different on the big Fords and big Mercurys at that time.

I just checked my '69 Ford brochure. Intermittent wipers were available in the full-sized Fords that year. The wiper control lever had an extra position to the left of park for intermittent operation, and there was a small knob that protruded from the instrument cluster mask -- I believe right below the washer control lever -- to adjust the delay interval.

Intermittent wipers were also available in the Fairlane/Torino in '69

That is good to know about their availability. I've never seen one in person on a full-size '69 or '70 Ford. Now that I know they were available in both years, I'll be on the lookout in junkyards.

Actually, you could probably score some NOS parts for these. I think the intermittent switch is more plentiful than the standard one these days (at least on ebay). It might even be less expensive. I believe I've seen the dash mask, and even the governor pops up from time to time. The real challenge would be the wiring harness.

But back to the main topic: I can't believe this wagon hasn't sold by now. I'm definitely tossing my $2 into the lottery pool at work.

I bet the vinyl top, or more accurately, what might be lurking under that 44 yo :naughty: vinyl, is scaring off some potential buyers.

This 1969 brochure page shows interval wipers optional on all full-size Mercurys as early as 1969.

I hadn't thought of that. You may well be right. My '75 Country Squire and my '75 Ranchero Squire both had vinyl tops that trapped moisture and caused rust in the roof. We actually ended up having the roof on the Ranchero replaced.

The vinyl top doesn't have to cause rust if it's sealed properly (or so I'm told), but I'd still want to check very carefully before shelling out $4500.
