That Mustang never did a thing for me, the prototype 67 looked alot better IMO.. It's a crap pic, so we don't know BUT it kinda looks like a wagon, real tail gate maybe? The one on Ebay "looks" wagon but IMO is a hatchback.....no matter the cargo capacity, if it doesn't fit through the hatch, you can't haul it. This pic has?? me also.....it's a proto, so you would think it's at Ford. Why is there a vette in the upper rite corner?
I believe this is a styling study for the 1969 Mustang - not an actual built vehicle or even a 'Concept' ('Show') vehicle. Notice the numbered plaque in the photo. It shows "10-25-66" This is probably the date the photo was taken. A 2-year lead time is about right. Styling study photos were typically taken with number identifiers like this. The concept also appears to have those 'wide-oval' whitewall tires that were just coming out then. I've seen this photo and this vehicle before, but unfortunately, I can't find out any more information on it. As to a tailgate or hatch, my guess with this one would be just a lift-up glass.
I doubt it was taken at Ford Motor Co. There's a 65-66 Corvette sitting right in front of the building. Ford would not have allowed that; any employee that drove a car other than a FoMoCo was told to park in the back of the lots.
Auto makers have been known to buy a competitor's car or two for.....study. Not unheard of. I'd bet this was taken at a Ford location.....
