I believe that the actual vinyl woodgrain is too expensive so it seems I have 3 options:

    1) paint the "woodgrain" area with a single color

    2) attempt to roll on a woodgrain pattern

    3) get a vinyl wrap place that does auto vinyl wraps to print me up one

I haven't checked on the cost effectiveness of #3, but if I could get one and clear coat over it it seems like that would be a pretty good way to go.

Does anyone have experience with the roll on type woodgrain. I've searched the forum but only found the hand painted type.

I'm posting here because there hasn't been a new post in the woodgrain section in a long time.

    Thanks,
    Brandon

hahaha, if I thought that would work, I'd use it. I'm not sure clear coat would go over that very well.

Why would you need to clear coat a wrap? A local business nearby, has a Suburban that is wrapped to look like a woody wagon. It has the woodgrain printed along with their company logo. It has a high gloss appearance. Meanwhile there is a brand new bright yellow Corvette ZR1 that has a clear Matt wrap on it to give it a flat yellow finish. So, its quite possible that what ever design you choose for the wood grain, you can probably get the appropriate amount of gloss to it.

I had thought if you get a clearcoat with UV protection then the vinyl wrap might last longer.

Wraps are actually "Laminated" with a UV layer. The results will last for years with average exposure.

I would advocate for that rather than going with ANYTHING ELSE!

I would think if you sprayed over the wrap it may "bleed through" chemically.

Then crack and make it hard to take off.

I have used "shelf liner" it was from 3m and lasted a long time(with proper care).

a guy I know has a 67 Merc Colony Park that only has 40,000 orig miles on it....he refuses to re-paint it....
he is looking into a full body wrap for it....WOOD and ALL !!!!

He figures he can do that for about 5G's....which is cheaper than paint:yup:

    JC Whitney wrap

I looked on JC Whitney and they sell enough wood grain 2 rolls 4' X 20' for about $260 to do my car so I am trying that first for that money I could do it every other year and be ahead just saying, gotta look better than it does now!

Always liked the way the 'wood' was laid out on the '67 Chevelle Concours. Are you going to select something close to stock appearance, or try something a bit different?

I'm seeing the cheapest way out is to paint the area with a contrasting paint color. Since no area is large I'd be tempted to use a rattle can and spray it one section at a time myself.
There are many stories on applying wood grain using paint. Takes a lot of time but still not too expensive. I've done several dashes and window trim years ago.
For some reason most people pay others to repair and build their cars. These things are hobbys. What happened to "do it yourself?" If you goof, wipe it off and do it again---and again!

I never saw a new 67 Concours just mine and I am no paneling expert but for $260 I can be a tape expert, but first I will replace right rear quarter which is rough I am buying a new elcamino quarter and going from there. I will keep old paint and at least when done all the (wood) will look alike Ben
