my 1982 country squire (its a LONG story) but 1st ONE question: ON the driver wheel well is the small box "ignition module" Next to it is another kind of box looks like it has wax or plastic in it, has a plug in the center. Is that a main computor OR is that little module all the electronic ignition the squire has and uses?? My poor squire HAD been a perfect car.
I answered you in your Introduction thread. Please pm me, and we'll go over what is happening with the old girl. I love these cars, and having had more than a few of them, including the predecessor Thunderbirds from the late 70s, I am more than familiar with all the workings of them, including how to get real fuel economy out of them.
Go get to that one bolt/nut/stud on the carb. It is tucked in behind the pull down for the choke, which is a bit of a pain. The good news is that it is the same size as the other. I use a deep 1/4 drive socket, a 1/4 drive U-joint, then an extension and then the ratchet handle. The Autolite 2 bbl carb has the same bolt, just as difficult to get to! Still, with patience, it can be done. Just look at what tools you have in hand, and figure out what it will take to get around the obstacles. When you put the new carb on, don't forget new gaskets, and if you aren't sure how good it is, a new gasket under the spacer as well. The ideal way to get these cars working right is to go with the Edelbrock Performer intake and square bore 4 bbl carb, but that is not the inexpensive way to do it. Sure does run nicely, though, once it is done.
