I heard on the news last night that the NTSB (National Transportation and Safety Board) said that tires only are good for 6 years. We don't put a lot of miles on our cars and many of you don't either on your classic wagons.

The Thunderbird got new tires in 2003. 14,000 miles since then. Not even close to worn but coming up on that magic NTSB six years.

The Ranger gets new tires at an interval of about 7.5 years or 48,000 miles. Well over the NTSB time limit of 6 years. I'm on my third set now and they have 8k on them.

The Cougar wagon has a set that I bought in 1995. :oops:mg: . They were on the 85 Cougar and I moved them to the wagon back in 04 when I junked the 85 as they were on wider wheels. I didn't like the skinnys that were on the wagon. 185/75R-14s. They do need to be replaced now but apparently I'm on borrowed time with this one, 13 years! They are 205/70R-14s which ride much nicer and fit perfect as the chassis is the same.

So, what do you all think about the NTSB assesment?

I have a set of slightly used Eagle RSA tires that are 10 years old in my garage... I guess they gotta go!

Did they mention why tires "expire"? I guess it has to do with the tires drying up?

They did mention that the rubber ages and will begin to fail resulting in tread loss.

I'd have to agree with that. Mine sat under a canopy for 7 years in Guadalajara, before we bought it. Tread was good, side-walls all cracked and all flatter than a hatter.

I've got a set of Goodyear Eagle ST tires on my '66 Coronet that I put on it back in 1993, and they only have had about 2,000 miles on them in 15 years. Hell, I guess I'm a bit overdue! NOT! The car has ALWAYS been inside and out of the sun. The tires look new! Would I drive them 100 mph? Probably not, but I wouldn't be afraid to drive 70-80 on them!

I may be old, but I've aged like fine double-malt Glenlivet. Ain't no lumps here. Now my tires get a bit lumpy in -50C, but what doesn't?

Sunlight and ozone will hasten the deteroriation of your tires. Thats why the people who have seldome used, but expensive to re- tire motorhomes keep those vinyl covers on their tires while they're parked.
For seldom used classic and show cars, even the ones who live in a garage, it would seem more prudent to buy inexpensive tires and replace them every five years.(y)
A blowout at highway speeds can damage your car if you're paying attention, and kill you if you aren't.
And even at low speeds, it will always happen when its rainng, or you're late for something, or you're dressed in good clothes.
    I wouldn't gamble my life for a $75.00 tire!
[don't ask me how I know. But I know.]
