So I made a speaker box for the rear of the wagon. The two mid-range speakers are sealed in there own portion of the box. The two subs are in the middle by them selves.

Being a rodder, I used old plywood and an old piece of 1x5. I did have to get another piece of 1x5 to seal the mids off. I tried contact paper and glue, but it bubbled. So the cover is roofing felt!!! Easy to cut, glued on and then I stapled what you don't see the bottom.

I have a 4 channel amp running the mids and highs. I thought being that 8's are less power that I could run the subs off of the 3 and 4 channel, but no bueno. The speakers are barely moving and clip of turned up loud. Means that they are WAY under powered.

The beauty thing about today's electronics is that even a cheapo amp is gonna sound good. So I will buy a cheapo 2 channel amp with like 600 or 800 watts. Should get them moving. Granted that 12's or 15's would be better, but I didn't want a huge gaudy box in the back.

Plus this can be removed fairly easily if needed.

    Some pictures....

Not at all my thing, 67temp, in fact, I took the fancy Kicker amp and speakers out of my car when I bought it, must have been 30 pounds of wire in there.........BUT, nice work as usual. Looks like you planned it well.
And....again....I would like you to lend me just HALF your energy and enthusiasm!:yup: :biglaugh:

Nice work and choice of location.

Back around 97, I built a 2 x 8" bandpass box that fit in the 3rd seat foot area of the 90 6000 wagon. I used 2 of the cheapie $10 woofers and a 100W Optimus amp. It actually sounded pretty good with the factory stereo.

Yeah, wagman76.....the PO had the pros put in a speaker like that in my car before I got it. Shown below. Then it had the Kicker amp and a speaker in the spare tire area and another speaker in the door across from the spare tire....they enlarged that area to accomodate the speaker there. It made the jump seat unusable. It wasn't easy removing all the miles of super heavy wire for this installation.

Fox, looks pretty much like the one I did. Mine was gray to match my interior. I just had a round hole in the center surrounded by black loom to make it look decent. I mounted my amp on the spare tire cover, and stuffed the crossovers and junk inside the cover area. I might still have a pic somewhere.

Nice set up! The physical size of the speakers doesn't really matter, weather they're 8's or 24's. It sounds like your amp is not pushing enough wattage to get your subs moving. They have to be suited for each other. For example I have 2 300 watt 10" speakers in a sealed box in my truck. My amp is 500 watt across 4 channels. The amp has a feature where you can "bridge" the channels. I have it bridged into 2 channels so instead of 125W, I now have 250W. That laft me 50 Watts of safty so I can crank it up without blowing any of my subs. On some amps you can bridge all 4 channels to go into both subs running in series but the amp has to be able to handle the impedance of the speakers or the the amp its self will overheat. All these specs are on the box your amp and speakers came in, along with the recommended air volume for a sealed, ported, or bandpass box. By the way, what are you using for a head unit (sterio)?

Looks good. I have to have decent sounding tunes in my vehicles. Since I installed a fullsize spare on my rear bumper, I used the spare tire well where the donut was located and installed a shallow 12" sub in a box I built. It is hinged so I can access the 2 amps and have a little storage space also. Before ditching the spare, I thought of building a box and then disguising it as a couple grocery bags. I was going to take some paper grocery bags and wrap the box with them but to where they looked like two functioning bags sitting next to each other. Then I would have left a little space at the top of the bags to fill it with empty boxes and fake plastic grocery items. I may do it for the heck of it one day just to see how it would turn out.

    Thats not a bad idea!!!!

I think I might have to come up with speaker box version 2. The box portion for the subs are too small. Only has a good Q for higher frequencies,

    More to come.....

Mike, that setup is a cost cutting thing. No more Q-Tips. It melts the wax out of your ears! Drowns out the kids hollering in the back, and saves on pitstops! Think positive!
