This guy, maybe with a different name...I don't remember, has been around before with similar text and, IIRC, Stef booted him. I don't know how they get in here but they do. I still say that a new member's first post should automatically go to the intro section so we can talk to them, find out some things about them etc. There is likely no real answer to preventing these idiots from performing their stupid acts but I would like to see SOME kind of screening instead of just letting them jump in and become a nuisance to everyone. These people are undoubtedly losers without a life that try and make everyone else's life as stupid and miserable as theirs. I also think that, in cases like this one, Stef should get their ISP number and inform us where the post originates from. It could tip one of us, maybe, to who it may be. I know they can go through other places and look like they are in China....but not ALL are that sophisticated or bother with hiding.

Its the new type of spam, as it only takes 10-15 mins of a link to be on a site to get search indexed, the more sites the search finds your link on, the higher your rankings.

So they really don't care enough to do it where its not obvious as the post doesn't have to last hours or days like in the past where you counted on folks clicking the links to gain something. It just has to be posted for a few mins.

#1 way to fight it is more mods, watch the patterns of active folks and pick those that over lap on their activity, so you end up with atleast 1 mod online near 24/7, plus more folks to take action when a thread get reported to where again, someone will be around near 24/7 to get the email and take care of it asap.

They don't bother my Virago forum cause of that. Its pointless to bother as a post won't last 30 sec, plus it make the forum more active, new mods are more active, and helpful, which makes more folks join when they see people get help all the time.

in the begining top poster became mods, after a while rules was you have to be around over 1 yr and be helpful. Which means we add a good 5-7 mods a yr. and it all just snowballs form there but in a good way. More mods, more members, more folks online......................

Well....Stef (Wagonmaster) runs a good forum here and has asked us to do what you did....report immediately....which I forgot to do.:( We don't have a LOT of problems here and when we do Stef is very good at taking care of them. We pretty much police ourselves. When it comes to certain things, however, I am not in favor of "what the people think". I'm more in favor of taking action not votes. But, I can assure you, Stef will take care of this and any other problems with finesse.

I have spent a considerable amount of time locking spammers out, but occasionally some do get by.

Since we are a group that is spread out across the globe in different time zones, I will look into what I can do to allow a few members to delete spam and ban spammers while im offline.

Also helps from time to time to force folks to email before they can get access, most spammer wont bother. We also ban @gmail.com addresses, which is spam central. Agian spammer won't bother to ask as they use auto scripts and posters.

Though we are kinda lucky, latest forum were using has CrackerTracker & phpBB Security installed. Which does spam but the best part is being able to see how many times a day some stupid kid tries to run some worm script on the site as it logs all their info and I get to have their hosting or internet shut off.

Which don't bother the pro's but the pro's know to aviod sites with the CT/phpBB Security in the bottom page header as its a lost cause.

All members must confirm their registration via email before posting.

I created something like this, but for spammers.

Interesting about gmail.com as I use it as do many folks I know. I get zero spam on it versus my .net account.

Stef, we see so few spammers here because you are very diligent with your moderation. We can't thank you enough for what you do.

Thank you very much, you are appreciated big time.

    Barry

Problem is they use auto programs that sign up, reply to that email and post, its all done automatic. [Why allot of site re arrange the boxes you fill out on the reg page often, screw up their auto programs when the fields change locations.]

But making them send a personal email to get in, add one more lvl to it.
just tosses a curve ball at them, they get tired of it not getting results and they move on for a while.

Funny though I see the same message or links get posted on a diff board tonight, and once again, I reported it ;)

I've got a question about the spammers messages. What the "H" are they gaining by doing this? Is it just mischief, wanting to be obnoxious, hooliganism, or what?

All of the above is my guess, Saf. These people must have an incredibly boring life.
Or....perhaps they want to lure you into clicking on their name and sending them an email.....who knows what would happen to your puter if you did that?

I've been wondering why our legislators keep adding 'designer' laws instead of getting basic about them. Take vandalism or robbery or car-jacking. What's the diference to the victim? He can't use what he owned, what he paid taxes for, from his salary, to his investment in time and sweat-equity/education and dusted knuckles, to buy and use. So why not nail this 'loss-of-property' laws down to "Rendering the items as useless to the lawful owner/proprietor". I don't why I noticed lately, how many broken car mirrors hanging off of newer cars, especially on the driver's side, most of them motorized - expensive to buy and replace. The loss to the owner is finding one, paying to replace it, and increase to his insurance premiums, plus the risk due to not having one while the part comes in.

At least with a basic, victim-oriented law, restitution would be a given component of the sentence. As it is, at least here in Canada, the little snots or big ones, would have to pay for the damages, back to the victim, instead of this 'community service revolving injustice door' system.

Same thing with these spammers. The dollars and hours needed to develop code to defeat them comes from somewhere. Loss of opportunity to do something creative, instead of defensive.:taz:

Course my ways arent perferct just I have been dealing with this kind of stuff since 04, use to get hacked every spring, and spam got so bad that I had to background check every new sign up by running their info through google.
Been one very long intresting game, and what it is, is a game, what can "I" get away with and how can "I" stop them.

Though the last few years was kinda mellow as I defeated them by using out of date software, latest hacks n junk kids are trying just didn't work. But we still had to have folks to watch 24/7 But this new software with CrackerTracker & phpBB Security is like a sigh of relief, I don't have to be up at 3am to watch things anymore ;) But after so many years of it, Im still up at 3am ;)
