Wow! Flashback! I had a regular SSP car...never had the Smash*Up Derby. I remember a yellow Vega FunnyCar with slicks and that whipcord would hurt like crazy if it got you as you pulled it through to make it go. Can't remember what ever happened to it...probably destroyed it in my own smash-up derby... David
That was from the 60's, so no - didn't have that. I do remember a toy I did have though, probably came out in '57 or '58 - sort of a 'car designer' kit. Basically a plastic model that you put together, using your choice of 2 or 3 different options for each main body panel. Parts attached together - no glue needed. Car was about 10" long. You started with a basic chassis and cowl, then added the body parts. Get it all done, then you take it apart and build something else. Don't remember specifically what it was called.
I Did, I can still remember the song from the TV Comerctial,,,, "smash bang crash em up' "put em back together again" "smash up derby is lots of fun" "you can do it with a friend" Great memories My derby set is long gone but in 1972 we went to Tampa Florida for X-Mas, my sister and I were aloud to buy one toy (for X-Mas) and I got the red SSP Corvette. I still have the Vette, no wheel or rip cord. It's on a shelf in my shop. Those cars were a blst to play with!
Talk about going back in time. Great links.I had a SSP 70 Superbird in Plum Crazy Purple. Had a lot of fun launching it off the back porch after pulling the rip cord.
So were the T sticks that you used to power them. We used to have SSP stick wars. It would leave a nasty welt with those teeth.
...ever have your hand a bit to close when you ripped the rip cord! Wer'nt toys a hell of alot more fun before all the CSA/UWL, bla, bla safty stuff came along?
The government takes all the fun toys away Banned from sale in the U.S. and Canada Image from U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notice On December 19, 1988, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned lawn darts from sale in the United States.[1] Shortly after, in 1989, they were also banned in Canada.[2]
God old lawn darts, I don't ever remember a kid or even hearing of a kid getting hurt with those but I do remember a couple times drunk aduts having some problems, one piercing into the roof of a camper, the other time piercing the hood of a car.
