Hi all. I have a 1966 Catalina Wagon. Dual exhaust out the back of the car. I can;t drive withe rear window down because teh exhaust fumes get sucked up into the back of the car.

SOLUTION? I am hoping a roof-rack mounted rear deflector with push air down the back of teh car and solve the problem...not sure it will work or if such a correct old part is available?

Otherwise, I'll have the rear exhaust re-routed to behind the rear wheels.

    Ideas? Source for parts?

    Thanks, Bear

I would think a deflector would help. But I would still want to reroute the tips out the side of the bumper ends or somewhere between rear tire and bumper.
Son just had tailpipes put on his 1985 Chevy truck routed just ahead of bumper ends to the side and they look nice.
Even with a deflector I wouldn't trust driving slow with the windows down with exhaust tips straight back.

    Yep.
    Do that.
A deflector won't solve the problem.
It WILL keep your rear window a little cleaner when you have to drive in rain or snow, but it won't solve your DANGEROUS exhaust problem.
GOOGLE "Station Wagon Effect" for pics and videos.
Why do you think the OEM engineers routed the exhaust to the side?
    'Cause they're smart, thats why.
Plus, the ground clearance issue; when you leave a steep driveway, your rear exit pipes will drag.
    Lose them.

Some people route the exhaust out just ahead of the rear wheels, but I think there are clearance issues with that approach too.
Just behind the rear wheels seems to be best the best way to do it..

Almost any local muffler shop can bend and install the pipes for you for a reasonable price.
Just ask around. Maybe the local Pontiac club would be able to help:

I'm in the process of rerouting mine right now. They looked great out the back, but the will have to look safe out the sides. Love my kids too much.

And for the clearance issues ... yup, had them too. Both exhaust tips were scratched up on the bottom.

These replies are all correct and contain excellent advice.
Be safe; change the tailpipes to solve the cabin exhaust issue.
The deflector will help keep the rear window clear, but don't count on it to control the exhaust gas intrusion.
