I did a forum search, and didn't really find anything, so I apologize if this is a duplicate question or has already been addressed somewhere. Any suggestions on a good radio that will fit in the slot of an 88 LTD Country Squire? The "aerial" (as the previous owner called it) is powered on a manual, stock switch so no worries on that part. I just need something that will fit and is NOT a tape deck. While I have plenty of tapes, they're in boxes in the shed. MP3 ready is good, USB isn't necessary. We're not iPod people, we're Android fanbois so no need of iPod compatibility. I tried "the google" but really didn't get very many answers either, figured y'all would know pretty quick without me having to want to shoot myself and walk into Best Buy and try and talk to a blue shirt there.
crutchfield.com should have something and they usually give you the mounting kit and wiring harness adapter
Skink, pick a store, any store you care to deal with, and pick a stereo you like the look and sound of. It is that simple. Your car, like my 88 Grand Marquis sedan, has a standard size "single DIN" opening already there. If you do not have the Premium Sound speakers that were part of both the Premium Sound package and the even more expensive High Level Sound Package, then the wires for everything are right there connected up ready to go. Pigtails to plug into the factory harness are readily available. IF you have the 6 speaker system, you will need to open the doors and rear speakers and plug in the second set of speaker wires that are run, leaving the currently used ones unplugged. You will also need to run new speaker wire to the 2 speakers on the top of the dash, tying them into the existing wires for the door speakers. It is really easy to do, too.
If you haven't already experienced it, you might want to check out satellite radio. A lot of the head units sold now are 'Sat radio-ready'. We have Sirius XM in the Edge. We pay less than $12./mo. I'll be putting it in the Way Back Machine when I get around to it. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SXM145B/Alpine-CDE-SXM145BT.html?tp=5684 Also to note: You might want to check out what 'regular' radio stations in your area broadcast on 'HD' frequencies. Quite a few head units offer HD radio.
crutchfield rocks .... just like it has for about 35 years. and their vintage catalogs bring me lotsa mula on ebay!!
Thanks again everyone. I may just go with a single DIN DVD / Nav system. But I probably won't. Just a basic radio for listening to pod casts while riding up I-95
