My 81 Caprice wagon develops a quote loud squeak from the speedometer cable after running for about a half hour. Really annoying and getting worse.

I've tried to reach up behind the dash to remove it and then try to fill the cable with lubricant, but can't seem to squeeze my hand up in there. Chilton claims this is possible to do without pulling the instrument cluster.

    Anyone tackled this? Tips?

Will lubricating the cable solve the issue, or do I need to install a new cable entierly?

If you can't get the cable loose, you might can remove the cluster screws and pull it forward enough to reach behind it and disconnect the cable. Once disconnected, pull the cable out from the top, clean it, and coat with vaseline from bottom to top. Don't put any on the last 2 or 3 inches where it goes into the speedo. Re insert into the cable housing. Most likely, you will have to take the adapter loose from the tranny to get the square end back into the driven gear. Put it all back together. Good luck!(y)
