GM Oil Pan

    85 Caprice, so i guess im asking anyone who owns an 80s gm full sized box wagon. Do you have to jack up the engine to swap out the oilpan gasket?

    Technically I know nothing of GM cars but you'd appreciate the extra room if you did jack it up.

    Oh yeah! Depending on which engine you have, you often need to properly index the crank so the counterweights are up at the front as well. The reality is that by the time you do everything you need to do for oil pan removal, you're only an engine hoist and a few trans bolts away from pulling the motor.

    With the 87 caprice wagon, yes! I'm guessing it's the same, or pretty much as the 85.
    Both engine mounts should be removed at the block and you can jack it up at the crank shaft hub.

    It would make it SO much easier, that's for sure. As joe said, it would be just as easy to pull the motor out to do the switch. Just my 2 cents.
