I plan to go with a 17x9" wheel all the way around, 275/40R17's, and I was looking for wheels in said size with a 5x5 lug pattern when I found these...

Since I have decided I'm sick of tan, and am just going to flat black the tank, 'cause I like a good flat black paint job on these boxy cars, I'm going to probably go with these... Side note, lifting these is not going to be fun, but who cares? I think it will go good with the hood ornament I plan to use, which is also a skull. :D

This isn't a question, or discussion, just a cool future cosmetic addition to my car I thought I'd share, unless I find something cooler than wheels with chrome skulls, which, for a 24 year old metal head, isn't likely. I don't care for big flashy wheels, excess chrome, thin spokes showing off brakes, if I'm going for a wheel, it's either entirely functional (Cragar soft 8), or something so absurd like these it fits my personality.

Kids these days, huh? :slap: :D

I like them a lot more than I was expecting after reading your post. Kinda cool design actually. I can see them looking good on a few applications.

Hey now, at least I'm not driving some Honda with a used coffee can for exhaust, so low that a raise in the road will cause it to drag. No, I'm driving something that even when lowered could run over a Honda like it was a raise in the road. :D

Definitely different. Very cool wheels. They'll go well with the blacked out metal head theme you're going for. So you're lug pattern is 5x5? I figured it would be 5x4.75.

Yep, 5x5 lug pattern, little under 5" backspacing, they'll fit fine. The stock wheels sit at a 3.5" back spacing, but 5" is fine 'cause it pushes 'em closer to the outside, they'll be closer to flush with the wheel wells at the top, will get more spatter on the sides of the car most likely though. Plus side of having a car that already weighs 4,000lbs or more is that you no longer care about weight saving.

Also, Steve, I was just reading your wagons story, you bought that tank the year I was born, guess you do have the right to call me a kid. :D

Golly Gee! I hate to admit it ya young whipper snapper, but I like those wheels. Go ahead and order two complete sets. Xavier would also love those on his future dead body wagon.
They'll look good on your "Black Submarine." Get out the Rustolium rattle cans. :rofl2:

Oh come on, you don't REALLY think I'd spray paint my car do you? Ever time I see a spray painted car, I lose a bit more faith in humanity. I mean my rockers will be spraypainted for a while where I'm getting rid of the chrome trim to hopefully prevent rust from forming down there. That'll be a day of removing the trim, cleaning the rockers, knocking off pegs with my dremel, and painting.

Be careful spending a lot of money on something that looks cool now only to become "out of style" in a few years.

Trends come and go... but good taste and classic style remain constant.

For example consider the "Monochromatic" trend. Where is it?

Actually on another car forum that I am on they have discussed rattle can painting, roller painting, and using a brush. With the right paint and preparation, also plenty of fine sandpaper, water sanding and buffing all can look nice.
The bad thing about using spray cans is getting those over lap lines not to show. I use rattle cans on the dash, garnish molding and inner doors on all my cars. The 55 wagon was done that way in early 90's and the 48 Chevy panel truck late 90's.
Krylon and a few others are very fast drying and flow well.
Just saw Jairus' comment. He is also young but speaks like he knows what is happening. Those wheels will be dated before the tires wear out. And flat black is for cars being worked on.
Many hotrodders will tell how cool flat primer is but even a $100,000 little duece coupe will always look unfinished. I'd never dare write this on the other site.

It's not about a fad, or what's "In style", it's about what I like, my tastes don't really change, and I'm only building the car to suit myself, if others don't like it, well, it's my car, not theirs.

Also the problem with that is I don't really trust it to stand up to what I'll put the car through, I never really care what dust lands on the car, I'm not super cautious about brushing against it while it's dusty. So a shiny paint job would just be wrecked, that's why I'm going with flat black. Though I will likely wind up painting the doors and door jams myself, because it costs a fortune to have that done these days, that won't even be spray paint.

I cannot stand a car which is pure cosmetics either. My car will be go far before it has any show backing it it. I also cannot stand unsightly paint jobs with over spray, or sloppy coverage of less than commonly seen area's, if I have a car painted, it'll be done right. You will not find paint telling what color the car use to be unless you pull out the dashboard, or something similar. Though knowing me I'll probably wind up sealing the car and painting the inside when I gut it.

With that in mind, that's why a lot of people paint flat colors. They drive their cars and defects can be touched up. I do understand that.
But everyplace you drive your Semi-black Submarine you are gonna be asked "when ya gonna paint it?" So be prepared.
No one is trying to tell you what to do with your wagon. We are only discussing it. That's one great thing about old cars, everyone does what they want to do with theirs.

Also there was never a song written about the Black submarine!:rofl2:

:rofl2:[IMG] They do look kinda cool I have to admit but....

That's how it all starts, set of new wheels, with just one rattle can, and only "for awhile", next thing ya know........

Yeah you should see my brothers Camaro, same as it was when we put it back together three years ago, 'cause the damn thing keeps breaking down. Told my father when we put it back together, "We should replace the alternator, it's original and this thing has sat for about five years sine it was wrecked." Answer? "Nah, it'll be fine.". Three months after getting it on the road, the alternator spit the bearings out the back through the dust cover, seized tight. Also suggested we replace the fuel pump, catyletic converter, and fuel filter, the fuel pump went out a while back, and it got a new fuel filter while that was being put on, guess what's clogged now?

I'm not like most people, especially not most people my age, I have a good idea of what will and won't break, and I don't half way do things, don't worry man, this car will be completed, it will just take time.

Well once I get the seals fixed it won't be a submarine, IE, every time the wind blows when it's raining (Which is every time it rains), I won't have a wet seat. That's where the joke comes from, the car leaks so much, it'd have to be a submarine.

Also, as for not telling me what to do with my car, I just get touchy on that subject 'cause, the next person to tell me to scrap it is liable to get a few rather nasty words aimed at them. Why junk a car I can near infinitely rebuild? Like to see their beloved front wheel drive ecobox go through what most of our cars have, especially what mine has over it's roughly 420,000 mile, 27 year long life. That's just a touchy subject, no offense taken or meant. My aunt's reaction when I bought the car from my father is "Why don't you trade it on something newer?". Those remarks really get under my skin, that's like saying, "Hey, I don't like your dog, why don't you get rid of it?". And telling me to scrap it is basically saying "I don't like your dog, why don't you go shoot it?". The "My car is an appliance and must be reliable" mindset is REALLY irritating to me.

Reckon I think you're absolutely right taste is as individual as your fingerprint and if you like something that's all that matters. I think the wheels you like are cool and skulls just look mean IMO. Everyone likes what they like and should be treated with respect for what they choose in customizing. I have built customs in the past that were "dated" within a year but that's the way it is. With my own car I tried hard to go with classic looks that would stay "in style" and also make me happy, in the end you decide what that will be.
