That's actually the way my name is spelt, with a 'd'. That's the French spelling. Most firstborn males in Quebec get a name related to the Godfather or the French Province in France, that the ancestors come from. Mine came from Normandy. Napoleon wanted the family farm, located right where the famous Normandy beach is. The ancestor was formally called the Duque de Guilderie. Napoleon put them on a boat to Upper Canada, because he wouldn't pay for their property in 1686.

When they came to Upper Canada (now Quebec), they took on the name Guedry, which became Getty, (yeah the Oil baron), until a clumsy great-great-great-great-great, etc. uncle, who worked in a warehouse dropped the bags of beans. His co-workers started calling him 'the bean', and we got stuck with LaBine.

How another French Normand inherited Stormin' as well, is a bit tougher to explain. No idea. I got mine from ranting at the guy who hit my dad's car and had me flying into a field, at 5 years old!
