does anyone know how to jumper the ac compressor around the pressure switch, so i can see if im low on freon or the compressor is bad. its the r12 set up, and i dont want to pay for a vaccum and refill if the compressor is bad.
Disconnect the wires from the pressure switch and jumper between the two pins on the wire harness. If the clutch still does not engage it's probably the clutch. If it does engage and the air is warm then the charge is low. If cold then the pressure switch is bad. Do not allow to operate very long jumpered as if the condition is overpressure then there could be problems with blowing seals or hoses. Overpressure is unlikely though.
now, not to sound like a complete dumb (_l_), but Where might the pressure switch be located? is it going to be nearer the compressor, or condensor, or the dryer?
Not to sound like a smart (_|_), but you should look at Autozone's online repair guides. Shop manual quality pics and instructions. I like the cheeky icon.
The pressure switch is typically on the top of the receiver dryer. Two wire plug. They do fail but the most probably with an old R12 system is that it leaked. Just carefully remove the plug and jumper the wires on the plug. If the switch proves bad they are about $15 at NAPA. Just unscrew and screw on a new one there is a schraeder valve that the switch screws to and it will close when you remove the switch.
Hey....good instructions, TB! Nice to have people here that are experienced in specific car problems.
well, i jumpered the thing and the compressor kicked on, but the idle didnt compensate, so now i have to find that setting. but at least i know it needs either a squirt of juice, or a $15 switch instead of a $300 compressor and new system. thanks for the help again guys
