https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ank/ctd/d/1979-ford-mustang-pace-car/6733221252.html Here is your chance to own a 1-owner piece of history. 1979 Mustang Pace Car Edition. The second year of the famed Fox Body Mustang that ran until 1993 with the legendary 5.0 302 V8. The motor has been gone through and the body looks fantastic! Period correct rims and tires and stock Recaro Racing Seats. Do not miss this opportunity! I never knew the 78 Mustang II was a fox body.
Me neither. '78 was the Fairmont/Zephyr, '79 was the Mustang/Capri, '80 was the T-bird and Cougar and '81 was the Granada/Cougar. There were the Lincoln luxury sedans also introduced in '81, but the Mustang/Capri version was definitely '79. I'm willing to bet, however, that he's referring to the first production versions, which would've rolled out in August or September '78, as '79 introductory models.
And the specific Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replicas were all 'mid-year' debuts for the '79 Indy 500. As I recall, the cars had the Michelin TRX tire/wheel package, but I can't say for sure they were exclusively on all the Pace Cars.
You can tell it has been professionally restored because anything on the engine that can be easily removed or masked off has been painted Ford blue. Not sure I could get used to the interior door handle location on these first year cars. Just downright goofy. Overall it looks decent. New aftermarket upholstery for the Recaros is available.
The TRX metric wheels were standard on all pace cars. Michelin no longer produces the tires, so many of the wheels were replaced. (Coker bought the molds and sells replacements for an arm and leg, or you can get replacements from LMR that fit standard tires). As mentioned, a stock pattern interior replacement is also available. The air cleaner cover should not be painted blue and aftermarket valve covers are present, so there may be other engine mods. This car also has the less desirable automatic and tilt wheel which replaces the good looking three spoke with a standard plastic Ford steering wheel that is prone to cracking. If the car is rust free, the price is not bad. Nice restored examples can easily sell for twice this asking price.
The only Fox car I've seen with a three-spoke wheel was my '78 Fairmont I got from Mom and Dad, and it had manual steering. My big brother Fred managed to break the hub button on it because he thought the horn was there (turn stalk!). When Dad found out, his response was, "Who broke my f%&kin' car?"
Sounds like a friendly family. At least, he wasn't directing those pretty words to you. Or did he sometimes? From what I can decipher, it looks like he was implying that his car was in the process of starting a family
I was there when he discovered it, to which I ratted out my brother. And no, it was the family car, later passed down to me.
Wrong wheels as stated, but they look good on this car. Period correct "day two" appearing. These cars will continue to go up in value. This one could be a good investment.
I agree. Never thought I’d see the day when an 86-93 Mustang 5.0 is worth more than a similar condition and miles Corvette. ( mint ZR-1’s excluded )
