i was driving down the highway and she just shut off on me. it cranks up but it idles very bad and shuts off right away. i dont know whats wrong with it please help.
Try spraying in some starting fluid, if it fires up right away and idles normal for a second then it's most likely a fuel delivery problem, pointing to a fuel pump or a fuel filter. If it still does the same thing as before I would look at something electrical like plugs, wires or a coil. Worse case scenario it may have jumped timing, but start with simple, cheap and easy.
'68 won't stay running. Does the car shut off immediately after starting, or does it run for more than a few seconds? Possibly the ballast resistor, if your car has one. Also, could be a bad condenser, if yours is a points/condenser system.
Hi, Did you resolve your stalling issue? because my '71 Squire is stalling as well. However, it stalls when I apply the brakes... I was told the brakes are connected with the tranny or carb can't remember...? Let me know what you found out with your ride, thanks!
no ballast in a Ford....but very possible its the condensor....but it sounds like fuel....sticky needle n seat? change the condensor...if that dont work...pull the carb apart and see if the floats sinking...and put a seethru fuel filter on it...just so you can see if its empty when it stalls...could be crap in the pickup in the tank as for you Brazi?....that sounds like a brake booster vacuum leak....listen for the HISSING when you hit the brakes
When you're in the business for a long time, you tend to see unusual things. We had a Tempest that would start and idle all day long. If you drove it, it would go for an undetermined distance and then stall, but would start right back up and run for another undetermined distance. Had it on the scope but couldn't pinpoint the cause, but decided it had to be fuel. I happened to note that they weren't running an air cleaner, so I pulled the top of the carb off. There was a glob of hood insulation floating around that had entered thru the bowl vent. As you drove the car, it gradually got sucked down into the jets and shut off the fuel supply. As soon as the car died, it floated back to the top.
Ford doesn't use a ballast resister like GM's do. They us a resister wire from the switch instead. You have to change the ignition resister feed wire to a plain 12 ga. wire to get 12 volts thru it. Good Luck. Dave
