Hi all we have a 1987 Cadillac station wagon and the tailgate is the standard 2 way GM part for a Chevy, Pontiac, Olda or Buick I need the rubber molding I think it is called the window wipe? It is where the window rolls into the gate The sun has cracked mine and the part is discontinued I tried Steele rubber and can't find it any leads on a source Thanks JeRita

Google "Obsolete GM parts," and you should be able to find places that buy up NOS parts that dealerships empty out.

Lets keep bumping this thread as I am painting my 87 Buick this summer and would like a new one also.

    WHO, WHAT, WHERE, HOW MUCH?

Of course shadbelly4 gets first divs as he started this thread:tiphat:

I believe the correct name for it is a window sweep.

    Thanks for some leads Joe.:)

Not sure about the first link you posted though

    http://oemcats.com/oem-parts/20225797.html

    Quote from link.......

Part 20225797 is used and compatible with these cars

    • Chevrolet
    • Buick
    • Pontiac
    • Oldsmobile
    Caprice 1982...1990 El Camino 1982...1988 Monte carlo 1982...1988 Chevette 1982...1987 Impala 1982...1985 Citation 1982...1985 Malibu 1982...1983

We sure we are talking about the tailgate window sweep if the same part is compatible for a 82-87 Chevette for example from the above?:hmmm:

(IMO, if a site can't post a pic of what they are selling witch in this case a part that no way would be compatible with the cars above............ not sure if I'll be sending my visa # anytime soon:biglaugh:)

have say thanks again to Joe:) Talking with my local GM dealer part #20225797 is supposed to be the correct number for the exterior window sweep. Wheaton GM of Victoria where I live emailed me a tear down pic of the 80's full size wagon gate and all the hardware but as I expected.....not gona find the part/parts through the dealer anymore witch I expected. Wish I could load the info pic wise but it came in a HTL???? form and I have no clue, I can't upload the info:banghead3:

Now to see a pic of the part before I personally buy it....... just can't buy if the part is referred to as the same for a Chevette, Citaion etc

But seriously, thanks big time for the info, joe:)(y)

Your fundamental problem is believing an on-line application database. These are riddled with errors. RockAuto, Advance, AutoZone, even NAPA have mistakes. Try and buy a motor mount for a late-1960s Olds Cutlass or 442. EVERYONE has the applications wrong. Advance used to show that a Vista Cruiser used B-body ball joints instead of the correct A-body parts.

This is why I research part numbers using factory parts books or equally well-vetted databases and order by the part number NOT the applications on a website. Common sense should tell you that there are no Chevette parts that fit a full size in any universe, so OBVIOUSLY the database is incorrect. I do know that the GM part number is correct.

As for insisting on photos or other proof of life, good luck with that from a website like that one. Either take your chances (not unreasonable when you're getting an otherwise unobtanium part for $70) or keep looking. I used GM Parts Obsolete and found a dealer that had a number of these strips in stock. I'm kicking myself now that I didn't buy all of them.

Not picking a fight, but common sense is why I question online data-adverting/online buying of a out of date/old/etc parts and why I research myself:tiphat: . I went through this when trying to locate the gas tank fuel sending unit for my 72 Beateor, and site/shop advertising was very similar ( this parts works for just about everything). Yet contacting, every body was willing to take my $ BUT with no guarantee( you pay, if it's wrong, too bad so sad). Embarrassing as it is I can't remember witch member shot me in the correct direction but I found through them exactly what I was looking for complete with a guarantee that it was the correct wagon only part and it was.... compared to others who were willing to take my $ for a sedan sending unit saying it will work for a wagon witch BTW it was forum members who gave me the red flag, that's not the correct part, even if they say it is. Sure $70'ish is chump change today, but I'm not willing to gamble first and I'd hate to see some one else loose out $ based on improper so to say online advertising. If they can't advertise correct, WHY would you expect to get what you are after, after all this one company is using the same part number for how many cars??

I have no personal experience with any of those vendors. I simply googled the part number and those were the first three that came up. I DO know that is the correct GM part number, and the fact that other vendors also list it as the correct application, as does the GM parts book, (and the package on the one I did buy) makes me very certain it is correct. Personally I couldn't care less what you or anyone else feels about buying this part online. I simply provided the info. Use it or don't, your call. I will say that by your logic, we shouldn't be buying any parts from NAPA, Advance, or RockAuto, since those online catalogs have similar errors in them.

Thanks Joe for the info and shadbelly4 for starting this thread. My '87 CE could also benefit from one of these, although it's not yet at the top of my list. Replacing the driver's door rubber seal comes just ahead of this on my wagon's list of needs. But that's a subject for a different thread. ;)
