1985 Cavalier Wagon $5300 Ford City PA

Not sure about the price.

Seems a bit optimistic on the pricing, based on the visible damage.......

Yeah. I must be getting old. Never thought of an ‘85 Caviler wagon as a restoration project. Think if I had to have one of these. I’d really try and find A jazzed up loaded two tone, or a shelf paper one in a lot better shape. Did the early ones have a wood option? Or am I thinking of Celebrity?

 

When I read the post title I thought it was $3500 and that seemed high. Then I opened up the ad and realized the asking price was actually $5300. I'm not seeing that. Another one of those cars where its old so they think it must be worth money if it hasn't rusted into the ground yet.

 

For some reason I don't think they ever put shelf paper on these, or the Pontiac versions for that matter. Heck even the Buick or Olds versions that had the shelf paper were pretty scarce. The smartass in me says put a Cimarron nose, badging and seats on it and call it a Caddy. You could even do that to a sedan. Oh never mind, GM already had a "ready-made" version of that....

All joking aside, I once drove an 88 or 89 Cimarron and it actually seemed a pleasant car to drive, but prolly by the end of da run, they prolly gussied it up to the point where it was actually "nice".

I hate to say it, but living in Pennsylvania at the time, a Cavalier was like a "default" new car for people on a budget - even if you lived in "Ford City" as this one did. I know in Eastern PA it was - I think my sis had a few of them, but I think hers were all Z24's.

 

I believe the only J body wagon that offered a woodgrain option was the Olds Firenza Cruiser. And you're right, they're very rare (with or without woodgrain). The last one of these I saw (and, in fact, the only one I can remember ever seeing) was about 10 years ago -- ironically as I was leaving town for an ISWC convention. More years ago than that, I did see one or two Cavalier wagons with custom woodgrain that were done up for 84 Lumber. Of course, I see almost no J body wagons or even sedans anymore.

 

$5300? They must have misplaced the decimal point by a spot. Or maybe two.

 

What a pleasant surprise to a man heading towards dotage. I thought I had remembered a J body with papers, as it were. It seems like ‘82 to’84 might have been its run with wood. I vaguely remember a neighbor who’s wife drove a tan one with what I had thought was wood grain. Thank you all for your collective wisdom and comfort.

In the early 90's we bought an '84 Cavalier wagon in the exact same color, in roughly the same condition.. IIRC, we paid $400 for it at an auction. I'd value it at about the same today.

I used to sell my vehicles like that, the 'Sucker Born Every Minute' approach. Apparently, the 'Suckers' I was trying to locate lived somewhere else......... Much better to start at a reasonable price to begin with (allowing for a LITTLE bargaining room), and be done with it......

Of course, there are always those who thing their (stuff) is worth A LOT more than your same (stuff)........paraphrasing George Carlin here.
