    Hi,

I have noticed my speedo isn't working so have done some fault finding on it.

The cable is fine and the speedo head it fine, with the cable removed I can spin the gear wheel by hand it will flick the needle across the gauge no problem. But as soon as I connect it back into the car there is nothing.

I have removed the gear wheel on the transmission end to inspect it and there doesn't appear to be any wear, all the teeth are sharp.

However, I can't see what else could be causing the problem, but before I go ordering a new one I just wanted to run it by the forum to see if it's a common problem and if replacing the gear wheel will cure it? Or if there are any other ideas of what it could be?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Phil.

Maybe something to do with the gear on the out put shaft, in the trans? Not sure if they were plastic or, part of the shaft in the 70's

The gear on the tailshaft is steel and all seems OK, Only thing I haven't done is get under the car and check it is spinning when in gear, although it does seem solid enough. It is as real mystery

How did you verify the cable was good? It could be broken inside the sheathing. Can you disconnect the cable from the speedo, but leave it connected to the trans to see if it spins while the car is moving? You don't need to go far/fast to check it.

Ive had the cable apart, the inner cable is good and moves freely inside the sheath. The car is in the air at the minute with no brakes but Ill connect it up as you suggest today and run it up on the axle stands. It just doesn't seem to make sense as the gearwheel looks so good. It all appears to be original, not as if somebody has replaced it with the wrong one then done no more about it.

I am almost too embarrassed to say what it was!! If you've got the car on blocks, the 1st gear you hit when you move the selector is reverse!!! Anyway now Ive dropped it into drive it works, but I can see why it had been disconnected, it makes an awful squeaking noise.
Now just got to find the right kind of oil to use to stop the noise.
